In breaking but not shocking news, the Baltimore Ravens have made it official and franchised Ray Rice. The Ravens have until July 15th to work out a long-term deal with Rice.

Many people would be ecstatic to receive a raise of $6.870 million but Rice may not echo those sentiments.

Rice undoubtedly wants a new deal in Baltimore and the best situation for him and the team is to work something out long term. For Rice, if he is to be injured without a new contract, he could miss out on a lot of guaranteed money.

Many players have held out of camp and received fines for not showing up. Rice has done nothing throughout his career that would influence anyone to presume he would be hold out of camp but he must do what is best for him and his long-term financial future.

With Rice playing one of the most brutal positions in football, it’s going to be a tough decision on his end.

No matter how this plays out, Rice will at least be back in Baltimore for the upcoming season.

I now regret every word that I said to Rice’s agent, Todd France when we met in Dallas two years ago. I told France, “Make sure Ozzie gives a ton of money to Ray, he deserves every penny of it.”

Rice deserves to be paid at an elite level but not near the $100 million the Vikings gave Adrian Peterson.

Just because other teams agree to overpay players with horrible contracts doesn’t mean the Ravens have to.
