Profootball24x7.com has been able to secure a copy of sworn testimony given during NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell’s interrogation of Sean Payton and the Bounty Gate scandal as recorded by a league appointed clerk stenographer.
Roger Goodell: Sean, earlier you testified that you had no idea of any bounties being placed on the heads of opposing players and that it was really a concept brought up in jest. Later you said that just to be certain you ordered Coach Gregg Williams to not engage in any practice of bounty hunting.
Was Coach Williams clear on what you wanted?
Sean Payton: Crystal.
RG: Any chance Coach Williams ignored the order?
SP: Ignored the order?
RG: Any chance he… forgot about it?
SP: (Confidently) No.
RG: Any chance Coach Williams left your office and said "Old Payton is wrong?"
RG: When Coach Williams spoke to the team, and ordered them not to execute any bounties, any chance they ignored him?
SP: You ever coached on an NFL sideline, son?
RG: No, sir.
SP: Ever gotten in the grill of a 6’7” 350 pound man?
RG: No, sir.
SP: Ever forced to make a pivotal game decision in seconds while a nation is watching and counting on you?
RG: No, sir.
SP: We follow orders, son. We follow orders or players get hurt – seriously hurt. It’s that simple. Are we clear?
RG: Yes, sir.
SP: Are we clear?
SP: (Reciting) Favre was a highly protected quarterback, he was jokingly warned beca…
RG: (interrupting) That is NOT what you said! You said he was warned because he was in danger.
SP: That’s correct-
RG: You said danger, I said grave danger? You said "is there any other kind?"
SP: I know what I said.
RG: I can have the court reporter read it back to you!
SP: I know what I said! I don’t need to have it read back to me like I’m some kind of-
RG: Then why the warning? Coach?
SP: (Awkwardly) Sometimes coaches take matters into their own hands…
RG: No, sir. You made it clear just a moment ago that your coaches never take matters into their own hands; your coaches follow orders or players get injured. So Favre shouldn’t have been in any danger at all, should he have?
SP: You snotty pompous, figure headed bastard.
RG: If Coach Williams gave an order that Favre wasn’t to be intentionally targeted, then why did he have to be warned? Coach? Coach Williams ordered the bounty, didn’t he, because that’s what you told Coach Williams to do. And it went bad!
And now I’m asking you! Coach Payton, did you order the bounties?
SP: You want answers?
RG: I think I’m entitled.
SP: You want answers?!
RG: I want the truth!
SP: You can’t handle the truth! Son, we play a violent game, one that is filtered so that the viewing public that fuels your billions aren’t sickened by the dark dirty secrets that we cover up to protect your financial empire. That protection comes from these coaches who work tirelessly for the good of the league.
Who’s gonna do it Mr. Commissioner? You? Your clipboard carrying slackies? I have a greater responsibility than you can possibly fathom! You weep for your pansy quarterbacks and you curse the defenders who can’t even fart without a flag being thrown. You have that luxury. You have the luxury of not knowing what I know: that Favre’s bruised and battered body while tragic, probably saved the community of New Orleans. And my existence, while grotesque and incomprehensible to you, preserved a city’s esteem!
You don’t want the truth, because deep down in places you don’t talk about at fancy little owners meetings, you want me on that sideline! You need me on that sideline! We use words like "honor", "bounty", "loyalty". We use these words as the backbone of a life spent building this great game and protecting your Fortune 500 investors. You use them as a punch line! I have neither the time nor the inclination to explain myself to a man who rises and sleeps under the blanket of an 8 figure annual salary that I provide, and then questions the manner in which I provide it! I would rather you just said "Thank you," and went on your way hob-knobbing with the blue bloods. Otherwise, I suggest you pick up a whistle, and act like a coach and stand on the sideline.
Either way, I don’t give a damn what you think you are entitled to!
RG: Did you order the bounty?
SP: I did the job that—-
RG: Did you order the Brett Favre Bounty?!
SP: You’re g**damn right I did!!
