One of the biggest casualties during the NFL lockout was the
popular HBO series Hard Knocks. Having
such an uncertainty about the potential labor situation staring teams in the
face, no franchise would commit to the filming of the series.
Now that no labor unrest is possible until 2020, HBO is
planning on bringing the series back in a big way. According to FoxSports.com’s
Adam Schein, one of the potential targets of the network is the Baltimore
Per Schein, HBO has extended an offer
to the New York Jets to continue where they left off in the 2010 version of
series, which featured Rex Ryan’s foul mouth and the things he puts into it
(let’s go have a snack!)
Surprisingly, Ryan is reportedly at odds with Jets owner
Woody Johnson about inviting the cameras into their Florham Park facilities for
another season. While Johnson is all for it, Ryan has said he wanted to avoid adding
to the media frenzy that has surrounded his team (much of which he takes the
After his team’s performance last season, you can’t blame Rex
for being hesitant to once again step in front of the cameras. If Ryan can get
his wish, HBO could shift focus and pursue a summer filled football drama
involving the Harbaugh brothers.
Even though the brothers were the focus of national attention
around their Thanksgiving night battle, the chances of the Ravens granting HBO
the access they’d need to film the show in Owings Mills is highly unlikely.
Access into the Castle at 1 Winning Drive has been extremely
difficult since Harbaugh took over for Brian Billick and his “Camp Cupcake” in
2008. As any media member will attest, Harbs isn’t nearly as media friendly as
his predecessor. Even though the Ravens name has been floated around because of
the Harbaugh connection – it simply won’t happen.
If Ryan gets his way and Harbaugh also politely declines, as
we would expect, it’ll be time for HBO to turn elsewhere and ask another team
to have their offseason preparations distracted for our entertainment pleasure.
The Jacksonville Jaguars have already said they’d like to be
considered for the show. One can only imagine the uncontrollable laughter of Hard Knocks producers after they
received that memo.
Regardless of which team is selected for Hard Knocks this offseason – most of us
will be watching.
