The one thing Ray Rice does even more consistently than making game-changing plays is leaving an imprint on the Baltimore community.
In the midst of receiving accolades from national media and football fans alike for his fourth-and-29 conversion against the San Diego Chargers, Rice is using the attention to benefit his foundation, the Ray Rice Charitable Fund.
At his post-game press conference, Rice coined his play, “Hey diddle diddle, Ray Rice up the middle,” resurfacing a phrase he and former teammate LeRon McClain used to previously chant.
Realizing how well received the name was with the fan base, Rice immediately put plans in the works to create a t-shirt design to help benefit his foundation.
“That will be my way of giving back to the community,” he said. “It’s holiday time, it’s a time where I feel like it’s better go give than to receive.”
Rice said that all of the proceeds from the sale of his shirt will go to help him with future toy drives, shelter visits, his popular “Ray Rice Day” along with other events in Baltimore.
“For me, my profit is winning games, and that’s what I’m trying to do while I’m playing football,” Rice said jokingly.
In a true act of unselfishness, Rice even extends his hand – as well as his bank account – to support the charitable ventures of his teammates. As an example, Rice spoke about an event next week with Vonta Leach, where the fullback will take children shopping for Christmas presents at Target.
“[Vonta] is going to get a donation from me, from my foundation, to help out kids who don’t have a Christmas,” he said. “That’s what it’s all about this time of year.”
Chances are, you haven’t finished your Christmas shopping yet and there’s an even greater chance that person is a Ravens fan. If you think someone you know would be excited to receive this shirt from you, think about all of the joy the proceeds will bring as Ray Rice continues to make those less fortunate smile throughout the community.
Ray Rice has over delivered on his expectations for the Ravens and the same can be said for the community throughout Baltimore. This most recent venture is just another example and there are certainly more to come.
