After 15 seasons in the NFL, Matt Birk still doesn’t have a Super Bowl ring to show for his efforts; however, his trophy case is full of awards for simply being himself.

Regardless of whether or not the Ravens make it to the Super Bowl, Birk will be headed to New Orleans as a nominee for the Bart Starr award, which honors an NFL player for outstanding character and leadership in the home, on the field and in the community

The Bart Starr nomination is just the latest for Birk, who was already featured at the NFL Awards and pregame of last year’s Super Bowl as the winner of the Walter Peyton Man of the Year award.

In addition to the Walter Peyton Man of the Year award, Birk has won the Ed Block Courage award in 2006, is a six-time Minnesota Vikings Man of the Year award winner, and is a two-time Baltimore Ravens Man of the Year award winner,

At home, Birk is a father to six children and his involvement in their development and education is nothing short of something you would expect from a Harvard graduate.

Birk also spends plenty of time with his H.I.K.E. (Hope. Inspiration. Knowledge. Education) Foundation to help provide educational services to at-risk children by providing interactive programs and resources needed to guide a child through the key educational transitions between elementary, middle, high school and college.

For his latest nomination, Birk is one of ten NFL players vying for the Bart Starr award. Other nominees include: Nnamdi Asomugha (Philadelphia Eagles), Chad Greenway (Minnesota Vikings), Matt Hasselbeck (Tennessee Titans), Phillip Rivers (San Diego Chargers), Josh Scobee (Jacksonville Jaguars), Brad Smith (Buffalo Bills), Joe Thomas (Cleveland Browns), Justin Tuck (New York Giants), and Jason Witten (Dallas Cowboys).

The Bart Starr award is voted by NFL players and is named after NFL Hall of Famer Bart Starr. The award honors the player who best exemplifies Starr’s commitment to family, teammates and the community.

We at Russell Street Report would like to congratulate Birk on his nomination and thank him for his outstanding work in the community. It’s nice to know that we’re guaranteed to at least root for one Ravens player during Super Bowl week.
