There are rumors swirling that the Ravens were very close to a contractual agreement with Joe Flacco during the summer of 2012 but the progress made by Flacco’s agent Joe Linta and Ravens capologist Pat Moriarty came to a screeching halt when Ozzie Newsome stepped in.

Word is that Linta and Newsome aren’t exactly golfing buddies and some observers have suggested that Ozzie believes that Linta is in over his head, having next to no experience negotiating high profile deals like that of a franchise quarterback.

Will a deal ever get done?

Those close to the team do believe a deal will happen but maybe not by the March 4, 4PM deadline. While the Ravens have to use the franchise tag by March 4th at 4PM, they don’t have to officially be under the Cap until 4PM on March 12.

So what difference will 8 days make?

The franchise tag is expected to trigger some cap casualties but those additional 8 days could be enough to get a long-term deal done with Flacco thus sparing some players from the cutting blade.

It will be interesting to see which tag the Ravens apply to Flacco, the exclusive or the non-exclusive. Tagging Flacco with the exclusive flavor could suggest the team is very close to a deal and they don’t want others in the mix to spin positive discussions in the wrong direction.

However a non-exclusive label could mean that Ozzie Newsome truly is fed up with Linta and he’s willing to allow the market to determine Flacco’s value.

Our resident capologist Brian McFarland will have more on this topic tomorrow.

If Ravens put the $14 million tag on Flacco, I think they will lose him. I don't think Flacco is in that Brees-Brady-Rodgers category, but the alternatives to Flacco will be a lot less desireable. I don't want some Alex Smith-level QB running the Ravens.

Pay the man , manning and peyton have similar deals and guess what, they make the playoffs yearly. Joe beat them so ozzie needs to remember the jeff blake and tony banks days!..

It's time for Joe to step up and tell his agent to make a deal already.

I haven't liked Linta from day one. It should be obvious to anyone that he has never negotiated a deal of this magnitude because of the way he talks through the media. This won't happen because Flacco isn't this type of person, but it would be nice if he stepped in and urged Linta to get this damn contract completed. Sign the man and then focus on Ellerbe, Reed, etc. before March 12th. I made a bet with a buddy of mine that a contract will get done at 3:59pm on March 4th, right before any tag has to be applied.

Ravens need to quit screwing around and pay him. Sure he may not be worth it - but it's THE MARKET if he were out there. Browns and Cardinals, others would be lining up to give it to him. Plus, Superbowl MVP. top 2 statistical playoff coming off of. He's 28. Probably will elevate his play even more now that he's done it IMO.

It's called being a salesman... You fake it till you make it, and if you don't ask for it, You'll never get it... Ask for more, and settle on less.. never ask for less then beg for more. SALES SKILL RULES # 1

Linta is crazy if he think's joe is worth 100 million. he is a good quarterback but that is a crazy price tag. ozzie put Joe as non-exclusive and show Linta that he is over his head. But the Jets might say other wise a risky chance to take.

That's all we need. A novice agent trying to make a name and get more big boy clients for himself at the expense of the ravens... and flacco for that matter... BODUNK!
