The Baltimore Ravens and 2013 first-round draft choice S Matt Elam have agreed in principle to a four-year deal (which includes a fifth-year option), general manager and executive vice president Ozzie Newsome announced Thursday morning. Elam is expected to sign the contract when he reports for training camp on July 21.

Elam, who was selected 32nd overall by the Ravens, is a 5-10, 210-pounder from the University of Florida. He played in 39 career games for the Gators, starting his final 26 contests at strong safety. Elam recorded 176 tackles (124 solo), including five sacks and 24 stops for loss. Posting six career interceptions (91 return yards), he added 13 passes defensed.

As a junior in his final collegiate season in 2012, Elam became only the second safety in school history to be named a first-team All-American (Reggie Nelson – 2006).

Note: According to The Baltimore Sun Elam’s deal is worth $6.767 million contract, including a $3.301 million signing bonus.

It is premature to compare a player who has not played a down to the best safety Ed Reed to have played the game, but this man has all the potential to play like a Raven. That's the same method that was used to train up Ed Reed and Ray Lewis. He should be just fine. Let's see.

Jimmy Smith is the best player on the RAVENS . WAYYYY TOO UNDER-RATED.. and unlucky with injuries... we shall see him becoming a shutdown corner and a tackling machine. Elam? cant get your hopes up , gotta get him on the field and see. he will pan out pretty good in my own opinion.

I hope that Elam is even better then Ed Reed. I know that is a huge thing to ask and hope for , however I feel he has everything lined up to be that guy. Elam and Huff should create one of the hardest center fields in all of Football! Add Webb and Smith on the sidelines and I see a huge increase in incomplete passes.

Hopefully tackling won't be outlawed for awhile yet.

I have high hopes for Elam as well, but you hope he's even better than Reed? Ed is arguably the greatest safety of all time. Elam hasn't even played a game, that's a little silly.
