On Monday, the Ravens made a minor roster move by claiming former Bengals safety Jeromy Miles off of waivers. To make room for Miles, the Ravens cut rookie safety Brynden Trawick, who has since been added to the practice squad.

Miles’ arrival was bad news for Trawick, and it may additionally cut short safety Christian Thompson’s tenure in Baltimore.

Currently serving a four-game suspension for violating the NFL’s Substance Abuse Policy, Thompson has missed the first quarter of the season, as he is unable to be a part of any team activities until Week 5. Unfortunately, in today’s age of the NFL, suspensions are common. While they often aren’t detrimental to careers, for Thompson, who has yet to impress since being drafted in the fourth round a season ago, it’s not looking good.

Thompson isn’t the only current Raven under suspension, as cornerback and draft classmate Asa Jackson is sidelined for eight games after his second violation of the NFL’s policy on performance enhancing drugs. Whereas Jackson shows that he’s deserving of a second third chance with the team, the same can’t be said for Thompson, who failed to stand out during training camp before serving his suspension.

For Thompson to find a spot on the team, he’ll have to show his value on special teams, and it seems that the Ravens are confident in their new acquisition of Miles, not just for special teams, but as a member of the defense at some point.

“We think he’s going to be a heck of a developmental safety for us and we think he’ll give us immediate impact on the special teams part of it,” head coach John Harbaugh said of Miles on Wednesday.

Special teams coordinator Jerry Rosburg also seemed pleased with the newest member of his squad. “He’s been a force in our division,” said Rosburg, who has coached against Miles in the AFC North for the past three seasons. “We’re really happy he’s on our team.”

Teams don’t like to admit it, but they can often overlook off-field mistakes as long as that player is a valuable contributor on the field. Thompson had a troubled collegiate career, as off-field issues led to his dismissal from Auburn and forced his transfer to South Carolina State. General Manager Ozzie Newsome has also shown that he’s not scared to part ways with a fourth-round draft pick just a short time into their career. Look no further than Tandon Doss’ wake-up call as the final 53-man rosters were announced four weeks ago.

Thompson is eligible to return following this week’s game in Buffalo, but if it actually happens is a whole different story.

I keep forgetting that ASA Jackson will be back. He was playing at a very high level and I think he will be able to contribute in a big way once he's back.

I was excited to read some truth about the teams overlooking off field activities if the player is a contributor on the field , but , then I read 'Ozzie not scared to part ways with draft choices',,,,,,,,,my goodness , that is weakness of Ozzie , Kris , you better than that,,,,,,,,,,,,95 % of your comments are right on and we thank you for that.................

Asa actually needs the Adderall for the prescribed reasons and the league has approved his use of it. He messed up when he didn't file his paperwork properly. ~ TL
