The Ravens have been the beneficiaries of some outstanding play from Daryl Smith. Beside him Josh Bynes has struggled in coverage and has trouble shedding blocks. Albert McClellan is apparently not an option and Jameel McClain remains status quo with his spinal concussion, the healing of which is stuck in neutral.

But what about the other McClain, the once promising inside linebacker, first round pick by the Oakland Raiders out of the University of Alabama? Might he be ready to return from his near four-month “retirement”?

If you listen to his agent Pat Dye, Jr., it may be a possibility. The Ravens still retain his rights vis-à-vis the Reserve/Retired designation.

According to Dye in an interview yesterday before a speech at Birmingham’s Monday Morning Quarterback Club, the 24-year-old McClain has cleaned up his act and will likely seek to play again.

“I admire the kid for coming back to Tuscaloosa, going to class and trying to get everything in his life outside of football situated,” Dye Jr. said. “It’s not my decision to come back or not come back. I think ultimately he wants to play again. He’s only 24 years old. He’s talented. It’s just a shame. It was such a great situation there in Baltimore.

Dye want on to say in the interview that, “It will be interesting to see what happens because the guy they signed to basically replace (McClain), Daryl Smith, is playing really well. I think there are other inside backers who are relatively unproven guys. I think Ozzie has very fond feelings for the kid and wants to see him be successful.”

Obviously a lot has to fall into place for McClain to make his Baltimore debut, assuming that ever happens, but it certainly is an interesting option to consider given Bynes’ struggles and Jameel McClain’s inability to get back on the field.

Should Ozzie Newsome be open to a possible return of Rolando McClain?

LOL I wonder how many people who said yes also said he was not worth keeping when he "retired"

I am of the opinion that he should take all the time he needs to get his life in order. Football will be there for him. It is important for him to make sure he is headed in the right direction in life. His life decisions will effect not only him, but those around him. That being said, once he is secure and in control of his personal life, bring him back and give him a chance.

To be honest, when he "retired", i read a few things at that time and told a friend of mine, that I thought it was possible that Ozzie could be sort of quietly storing McClain away for possible future use at no cost to the roster.

why not, we may only have daryl smith for this season after the way he's playing so the future may be a combo of bynes, brown, and mcclain. all young players with a ton of upside
