Joe Flacco and Matthew Stafford. They make plays, but they also make mistakes.

That is a storyline to watch Monday night, when the Ravens (7-6) visit the Lions (7-6) in a crucial game for both teams. Flacco has already thrown 17 interceptions, the most ever in his career. He is tied with Carson Palmer of the Cardinals for second-most in the NFL behind Geno Smith of the Jets, who leads the league with 20 interceptions.

Stafford (14 interceptions) has thrown at least one pick in 10 of the Lions’ 13 games. He has a strong arm, but he will throw into coverage and also take chances throwing to Calvin Johnson, because he trusts Johnson’s ability to come down with the football, even when he is covered.

Flacco threw three interceptions last weekend against the Vikings, but overcame those mistakes by leading a masterful game-winning drive in the final minute. That is one of Flacco’s greatest strengths. When he makes a mistake, Flacco’s confidence is never shaken.

Stafford has the same gunslinger mentality. But while both quarterbacks will be looking to make big plays Monday night, it will be interesting to see if they can avoid making the big mistake.
