Finally the Ravens will have an official role for Steve Spagnuolo in 2014, as the team announced he will take over as the Ravens new secondary coach as well as being named the team’s assistant head coach.

Spagnuolo, who spent 2013 as a ” senior defensive assistant” which by my guess is the equivalent to “run game coordinator” except on the defensive side of the ball is not really a shocking moving and in fact makes a great deal of sense.

Spags and Harbaugh have a history together dating back to their days in Philly where he coached the Eagles secondary for three seasons (2001-03) and fared rather well.

“Our players respect him, and a number of our veteran defensive backs recently said to me that they wanted Steve to coach them.” Harbaugh stated in a press release by the team.

A unit led by cornerback’s Jimmy Smith and Lardarius Webb, the Ravens secondary is coming off a solid 2013 campaign giving up an average of 230.1 passing yards a game ranking 12th in the league.

Ravens general manager Ozzie Newsome alluded to the fact that the team has a “need for a rangy free safety to make more plays on the back end.” So it is likely Spags will take over a group who will have some new faces in 2014.

While it is unknown at this point in time just how much input Spagnuolo will have in the Ravens defensive schemes, he has been known to coach a hard-hitting, physical style of play for cornerbacks and safeties.

I wish we would convert Webb to free safety. He would be very successful as he played safety on college and has the perfect skill set to do such. This could allow us to target cbs which would be easier than targeting a safety. We also have Chykie and Number 25 who showed some major improvement last year despite being suspended.

I've started to think that if Ozzie wants a rangy free safety he has to get him with our 1st round draft pick...either HaHa or Calvin Pryor. Both have nice size; choose well grasshopper.
