The Ravens made it known that they would target a playmaker at free safety this offseason yet there are really none that stand out from a rather pedestrian list of remaining players that fit that description.
The dearth of available talent has many believing the Ravens will look to the draft to fill the need. Others have suggested that the player Ozzie Newsome covets is already on the team’s roster.
He wears No. 21.
Let’s put this idea to bed now. You don’t take a young, up-and-coming corner who is paid handsomely and move him to safety. Such a move can throw your cap out of whack.
Lardarius Webb was the 21st ranked corner in 2013 according to Pro Football Focus and that was after a very slow start during the first half of the season. Let’s keep in mind that Webb’s slow start was heavily influence by the way the Ravens eased him back into action following his ACL surgery. Once he found his groove Webb was a top 10 corner.
This season the Ravens potentially have a Top 5 1-2 punch at the corner positions with Jimmy Smith. That gives a defensive coordinator a ton of options.
Several media outlets have reported that the Ravens will receive a 2014 7th round pick from the Miami Dolphins as compensation in the Bryant McKinnie trade. That isn’t true. The pick is a 2015 7th-rounder as we reported back on February 3.
So the Pittsburgh Steelers will not be penalized a draft pick for Tomlin-Gate? Steve Bisciotti is on record defending Mike Tomlin’s character and he has seemingly dismissed Tomlin’s temporary lapse of reasoning as an embarrassing incident from which Bisciotti and the Ravens are willing to move on from.
Now, had the Ravens lost that Thanksgiving Night game…
Steve Smith gave Ravens fans a bit of a scare yesterday. While being interviewed by Dan LeBatard yesterday he was pulled over by the police. Smith was let go, an incident that could have been the result of some unfair profiling. You can listen to the interview HERE.
If you follow Rolando McClain on Twitter (@RMcClain205), he seems like a man who is starting to get the itch to return to the NFL. But these kinds of things do have and ebb and flow to them. When I asked a Ravens exec if he thought McClain would return his response with hints of frustration was, “I really don’t know.”
And last but not least all of us at RSR extend good vibes and prayers to Mix 106.5’s Maria Dennis and Jennifer Aparicio, wife of WNST’s Nestor Aparicio, both of whom announced yesterday that they have been diagnosed with leukemia. May your strength and love guide you successfully through the bumpy road that lies ahead.
Here’s to your health and prosperity.
