Tale of the Tape RAVENS NEWS & NOTES: 3 Comp Picks For 2015

Posted in Tale of the Tape

RSR has learned that there will be a rotation among the 8-8 teams in each round of the 2014 NFL Draft. In other words if a team is picking first among the group in Round 1, then they will be picking last among the group in Round 2 (and so on)…

A team source has informed RSR that newly acquired safety Darian Stewart is a possible starter if the Ravens don’t get a good free safety in the draft. The team believes that Stewart is a better fit than James Ihedigbo. The former St. Louis Ram isn’t as physical as Dig but more rangy. The team hopes that he eventually is their No. 3 safety given his ability to play both free and strong safety.

For a closer look at Stewart check out Tale of the Tape.

The acquisition of Stewart leaves the Ravens at +2 in terms of compensatory picks for 2015. When James Ihedigbo eventually signs with another team they will be back to +3. For the moment the team expects those 2015 picks to be (3) 5th round picks.

This would boost the Ravens total number of picks in 2015 to 11, their own 1 through 7 picks, the 3 comp picks and the 7th round pick they’ll receive from Miami in exchange for Bryant McKinnie.

With that kind of inventory in 2015, it would not be surprising to see the Ravens deal a future pick this year to move up and get a player they like in the 2014 NFL Draft. Keep in mind compensatory picks are not tradable.

"Absolutely every source in agreement, 2014 not 2015." I suppose we can now agree that absolutely every source was wrong.

Prior to the trade for Zuttah the Ravens had all 7 of their picks for 2015, an additional 7th for McKinney and probably 3 comp picks. I'm not sure what's not "truthful" about that. And I don't know what you are talking about with Jones. Actually I don't know what you're talking about half the time.

Not really Tony. we do not know for sure they get 4th round comp pick and besides that comp picks in rounds 4 and 5 are not 17th selections so you are technicall right maybe but far from totaltly truthful in making that staement as for round 1-7 picks. a 3rd pick at the end of ny rounds is far from a goodchoice when you have lost the eralier pick in a trade. You also forgot to correct your Arthus Jones comment to theguy and told him Jones is not aplyer they get a comppick for this draft. Trying tokeep you straight as you do me sometimes but you are 30 yaers younger!

The counter to them moving up is that next offseason there are just a couple of free agents so the chances of picking up 2016 comps is low, so perhaps they look to the 2015 draft and the 11 picks to build depth and weather the relative lack of picks in 2016.

TL- The boys are on your case my firend! As far as safety Stewart, he is alot better at strong safety not a good cover guy for free safety although he has speed but better than Elam at this point. However that is where the Ravens plan to move Matt You said Ravens have 1-7 draft picks but theyy lost two,4th and 5th in Monroe trade.. arthur Jones is not aplayer they get acomppickfor thi syear,he just signed with new team.must play. they get picks for Kruger,Ellerbe and Reed and one othere. You are dealing with the talk show caller typestoo much!

This isn't news, I've known it for a month already: "RSR has learned that there will be a rotation among the 8-8 teams in each round of the 2014 NFL Draft. In other words if a team is picking first among the group in Round 1, then they will be picking last among the group in Round 2 (and so on)…" "For the moment the team expects those 2015 picks to be (3) 5th round picks." Doubtful- the pick from Arthur Jones will almost for sure be in the 4th round. In the past, JJ got us a 5th (4 yrs 19 million), and Cary Williams is expected to get us a 5th (3 yrs 17 million). Arthur Jones signed a larger deal than those 2 guys...

My source is a guy in that war room on draft day so I feel pretty comfortable saying everyone else is wrong. He added that the Ravens took the info down from their own site.

If Daniel Manning is a June 1 cut for the Texans, he could be an option... but it is appearing more and more likely the starting free safety will emerge from the draft.

Regarding what you said about Stewart, are hearing if his presence changes our draft plans at all? I know that you stated "if" a safety does not fall to us, but a guy like Jimmie Ward would look great in purple and black.

Are you sure the McKinnie 7th round pick is for 2015 and not 2014? The Ravens website, NFL.com, and multiple media outlets are all saying it is a 2014 pick. I like this pick-up of the back-up safety. It looks pretty clear that in the first round, we're either going safety (HaHa or Pryor) or RT (Zach Martin. The last two Super Bowl's proved the critical importance of safety play. Our 2012 game proved lousy safety play can cause you to blow a huge halftime lead. Seattle proved this year that excellent safety play trumps the league's best offense. We need a top safety and we're only going to find one in the draft at this point.

Michael huff 2.0! Are they really trying to convince us that Darian Stewart is a good starting safety?

Ed, it's possible that Arthur becomes a 4th, hence the term "for the moment." The quote came from a prominent participant in the Ravens war room. Some might actually think this is news. Sorry that you don't. When I asked about the draft positioning less than a month ago, another source at The Castle was still getting clarification on it. It has now been confirmed. Very sorry to disappoint you. Perhaps you'd like to be a new source?

Ideally they'd like Stewart to be No. 3 but they won't reach for need on Draft Day. That's why it's a possibility he could start. No one ever expected Dig to start and he did pretty well. Stewart is rangier than Dig and it will help put Elam in position to be a playmaker in the box.

100% positive! Scott you can take it to the bank!

No Einstein, he'd just be a placeholder for a rookie free safety until he develops. Hence why he was signed to a ONE year contract.
