Street Talk Bisciotti Excited to Have Steve Smith as a Raven

Ravens team owner Steve Bisciotti has to be giddy with excitement over the offseason moves his team has made thus far. Especially in free agency, and more specifically the free agent signing of wide receiver Steve Smith.

Bisciotti met with reporters in Orlando yesterday and you could almost visualize the smile on his face when reading his words to BaltimoreRavens.com reporter Ryan Mink about the former Carolina Panther.

“Steve Smith is the wild card. That’s an interesting addition to our team. Not only will he benefit Joe [Flacco], but I think he’ll benefit Gary Kubiak.”

Does Smith provide all the answers at the wide receiver position? No, but he certainly helps their cause. Smith came to Baltimore and said all the right things; he’s a vet and he knows when to keep quiet and when to speak up.

Don’t think for an instant that he won’t be the receiving corps’ voice not only on the field but in the locker room as well.

Bisciotti is a tough guy and prefers his players to be the same: no nonsense, a little fiery, and hardworking.

It seemed the loss of Anquan Boldin took its toll not only on the field but off the field as well from Bisciotti on down to Harbaugh. The 2013 offense missed that “type” of player no doubt.

Now, one could argue whether or not the production from Boldin or any other player of his magnitude would have made a difference with the struggles of the offensive line, but that remains an argument for another day.

However, Bisciotti and the front office made sure that wouldn’t happen again – hence the reason Steve Smith is now a Raven.

“But [with us] coming off a disappointing offensive performance, I think that adding Steve Smith is really the cherry on the top,”  Bisciotti told Mink.

“I think it will [bring attitude], I think we did miss it, I think Derrick Mason brought something with his attitude. In history, Derrick Mason is the only one that ever yelled at Joe Flacco and grabbed his helmet. [Boldin] brought that same, Throw me the damn ball attitude. I think his stats would prove it. [Boldin] would have one catch for eight yards in the first half, then 140 yards in the second half. He demanded the ball. Steve is that way too.”

Flacco will have his choice of weapons in 2014. The addition of Smith along with Torrey Smith, Marlon Brown, a healthy Dennis Pitta and the return of Jacoby Jones should form the most formidable receiving corps in Ravens history.

With rumors swirling from the owners meetings in Orlando this week, per the teams’ Twitter account this morning, Harbaugh confirmed that the Ravens are discussing the prospect of adding TE Owen Daniels, along with re-signing Ed Dickson.

(Sorry fans…the return of Dickson is quite possible.)

The 2014 Ravens receiving corps, under new wide receiver coach Bobby Engram, could be nasty in a good way.

With Steve Smith’s veteran presence and judging from Bisciotti’s statements…look out Ravens fans: you may just find yourself asking “Who are these guys” next season.
