The Baltimore Ravens made it official on Friday as they welcomed first-round draft pick linebacker C.J. Mosley to the Under Armour Performance Center in Owings Mills.
Mosley, the 17th overall pick and the first linebacker taken by the Ravens in the first round since Ray Lewis (96′), is happy to be in Baltimore and to play for a quality defensive team.
“I’m just happy to be here,” Mosley stated.”It’s been a blessing and a long ride since January and our last bowl game. I can finally say that it is over, and I’m ready to be a Raven, ready to get on the football field and prove to the fans, prove to the coaches, that I’m ready to play and help this team win.”
Ravens defensive coordinator Dean Pees and linebackers coach Don “Wink” Martindale are excited to have Mosley on their side of the ball.
“We have a Ravens-type player, a guy who will,” Pees remarked in an opening statement, “fit into our room, fit in, obviously, to the football plans, but the other part of it is that we’re always looking for what coach Harbaugh and Ozzie and [owner] Steve [Bisciotti] and everybody wants, [which] is they want Ravens.”
Martindale echoed the same sentiments about how Mosley will fit into the defense.
“Dean has already hit on it,” said Martindale. “[Mosley] is smart, tough, instinctive, fluid, smooth. I put in my report how he uses his hands in getting off blocks better than anybody I’ve seen in the 10 years that I’ve been in this league. I can’t tell you enough, and I know it’s already been said last night and again today, about the person that he is, the leader that he is.”
The drafting of Mosley provides the Ravens with sought after depth; however, Pees and company have no doubts C.J. will see the field in his rookie year due to his ability to play at multiple spots.
“I think it will be great competition,” Pees forecasted. “And the other part of it is the fact that this guy can play a couple of different spots. He can play ‘MIKE’ linebacker for us, he can play ‘WILL’ linebacker for us. Nothing is going to be handed to him; he knows that. Obviously, we think he can get on the field or you wouldn’t draft him in the first round.”
With the Ravens ‘selection of Mosley with their first round pick, it creates some breathing room on the depth chart regarding linebackers.
Prior to the pick, the Ravens had almost zero depth at the position other than Albert McClellan and Josh Bynes. While Albert and Josh provide do provide depth, most of their experience has been negated to special teams play.
The organization is pumped and excited as is Mosley and the fresh faced youngster was all smiles on Friday as his parents accompanied him to the media event.
Mosley was asked about his quiet off-field demeanor, and gave credit to his mother. “This is my mother right here, Tracey Mosley,” C.J. said, pointing her out. “Right there is Clint, Sr. – that is what C.J. stands for, if you didn’t know – Clint, Jr. So, pretty much the quiet side and the laid-back side – that’s all mom. And on the field, wild and crazy, making plays – that’s my dad.”
As the Ravens are once again locked in the “War Room,” the team still has plenty of holes to fill in tonight’s second and third rounds.
One thing for sure is they can sit back and relax knowing they got the player they wanted in Mosley for now and hopefully years to come.
