News trickled out over the weekend that 105.7 The Fan’s Mark Zinno is leaving the station after accepting a position with 92.9 The Game down in Atlanta. Both are owned by CBS Radio.
Zinno has been with the Baltimore based sports talker since 2006, prior to the switch to an FM format.
Because of my ties to the media many have asked over the years what I thought about Zinno’s style. With Mark, it’s all black or white, there’s no grey and he really isn’t an acquired taste. You either like him or you don’t.
His in-your-face brash New Yorker approach didn’t sit well with many but that was something that never really bothered me. I have the luxury of knowing Zinno off the mic and he’s much more approachable and levelheaded than his on-air demeanor might suggest.
And knowing the off the air Zinno allowed me to listen to him in a different way. He is passionate, opinionated, and is sometimes even off-the-mark (in my opinion of course), swayed by emotion.
But you could never question his commitment, work ethic or resolve.
Mark and I have had our differences, vented probably too often through social media. But it has never been personal and the beauty of it is that we both understood that. I hope those of you who have been taken back by Mark can understand that too.
Behind that robust voice and contrarian viewpoint is a good man with a big heart.
His support of country and his patriotism are proof of that.
Here’s to your success in Atlanta Mark.
May the Big Apple and the Georgia Peach be a match made in sports talk heaven!
