OWINGS MILLS — New Baltimore Ravens offensive coordinator Gary Kubiak played quarterback in the NFL for nearly a decade and has since coached quarterbacks like John Elway, Brian Griese, Jake Plummer and Matt Schaub, all of whom made the Pro Bowl while playing under Kubiak.

Simply put, Kubiak is a respected quarterback teacher and evaluator. And to Kubiak, Ravens rookie quarterback Keith Wenning has some intriguing characteristics.

“Gary has a lot of hope with Keith,” Baltimore general manager Ozzie Newsome said.

The Ravens selected Wenning in the sixth round of the NFL draft earlier this month.

Wenning is not going to be pushing Joe Flacco for Baltimore’s starting quarterback job by any means, but he adds competition for Tyrod Taylor for the backup job behind Flacco.

He also gives the Ravens a potential backup quarterback for the future. Even if he does not win the backup job this year, Taylor is set to be a free agent after this season and is not expected to be retained.

“To already have someone here to start to develop, to work with Joe, I think is a very positive thing,” Newsome said.

Wenning was a four-year starter at Ball State and threw for 4,148 yards with 35 touchdowns and just seven interceptions last season while leading the Cardinals to a 10-3 record.

Also of note, he led 10 fourth quarter comebacks during his college career.

All that said, Wenning is not a lock to be winning a job…
