OWINGS MILLS — Around this time last year, Baltimore Ravens coach John Harbaugh openly critiqued outside linebacker Courtney Upshaw’s eating habits while also acknowledging that Upshaw had reported to organized team activities significantly overweight.
Harbaugh said Wednesday that Upshaw is not in as bad of shape as he was last year, when the 6-foot-2 Upshaw, who is listed at 272 pounds, reportedly weighed as much as 295 pounds. But Upshaw admitted Wednesday his weight is not yet where it needs to be.
“I’m feeling good. Like I said last week, I’m still working. The weight ain’t where it needs to be, where I want it to be,” Upshaw said, “but it’s a grind. … I’m working, man.”
Upshaw did not say how much he weighs, but he did emphasize that he feels good during practice, much better than he did last year around this time.
“I was talking to Bob [Rogucki], the strength coach, and telling him how different I feel when running out here, especially on special teams because that’s one of the first things we do in practice,” Upshaw said. “And I’m really not loose and warm, but I’m able to go out there and feel great at the end of that little session.”
Harbaugh did say Upshaw’s weight is not quite where it needs to be yet, but he said the Ravens are yet to start closely monitor players’ weights. He also said Upshaw appears to be “in the ballpark” of where the team wants him.
