On Saturday, the Ravens hit the practice field for their first padded practice of training camp under sunny skies at the Under Armour Performance Center in Owings Mills.
The offense turned in a solid outing, looking faster, stronger and in sync which was a a huge improvement over Friday’s practice.
Notes & Observations
Rookie wide receiver Michael Campanaro turned in a nice day at practice making several catches including an impressive grab on the sideline from quarterback Tyrod Taylor.
Running back Ray Rice looked impressive in pads during 11-on-11 drills. Rice had several nice runs including a long touchdown run that caused the fans in attendance to applaud loudly. Much ado was made about the shape that Rice was in, and it’s clear that he’s ready to play.
The offensive line was much better today after allowing the defense to live in the backfield yesterday. Kelechi Osemele, Eugene Monroe, and Ricky Wagner were all solid and stood out in both pass protection and run blocking. Center Jeremy Zuttah and Joe Flacco also looked to be on the same page.
The tight ends turned in a solid practice. Owen Daniels was stripped of the football on his first catch of the day by linebacker C.J. Mosley but rebounded nicely, making several receptions and protecting the football. Dennis Pitta and Crockett Gilmore showed nice blocking skills in both 7-on-7 and 11-on-11 drills.
Jacoby Jones beat Chykie Brown for a long touchdown catch and new wide receiver Steve Smith, Sr. made an impressing leaping catch over Brown. Smith Sr. was very vocal today, yelling “this is for men – it isn’t for for boys,” to some defensive players in the area after a play.
Flacco was seen getting stretched out after a few plays but returned to action on the series with the first team. Flacco had a nice day, connecting with multiple receivers. His footwork looked incredibly clean and he was decisive in his reads and got the ball out clean and quickly.
Running back Bernard Pierce left practice early and walked off the field with a team doctor.
*Offensive lineman Will Rackley was not present for practice.
The Ravens wil return to the practice field on Sunday with practice slated to begin at 4 p.m..
