The defense took to the practice field on Friday with a different look than the past few days.
The injury bug has bitten the defensive unit hard two weeks into training camp. The Ravens lost rookie Brent Urban for the season with a torn ACL, rookie Timmy Jernigan again missed practice with a back issue, veteran cornerback Lardarius Webb is still out with back spasms and Daryl Smith is still suffering from a groin issue.
Jimmy Smith missed practice on Friday as well but there was no indication of injury – perhaps just a day of rest for the veteran cornerback. Corners Asa Jackson and Chykie Brown got the start for the first team defense during 7-on-7 and 11-on-11 drills.
The absence of Daryl Smith has given Josh Bynes reps with the first team defense. On Friday, Bynes and C.J. Mosley teamed up and made several nice stops during run defense drills.
Other Notes & Observations
Brown had an up and down day for the Ravens secondary. He was beaten on long passes on occasion, however had two key pass break ups including one where he boxed out LaQuan Williams in the end zone.
Linebackers Arthur Brown and Albert McClellan ran with the second team defense for most of the practice. Brown had several nice passes defensed including one from Joe Flacco to Torrey Smith. McClellan had a rough outing during blitz drills, when Kyle Juszczyk blocked him so hard he came off his feet.
Terrell Suggs was his usual “Sizzle” self on Friday. Suggs has had a great camp thus far and his explosiveness is back. In shape and focused on football, Suggs has been very disruptive in the Ravens offensive backfield. On one play, however, he was his own worst critic. During 11-on-11 drills, Suggs was beaten badly by wide receiver Deonte Thompson, leading to a touchdown and causing Suggs to exclaim “Oh Sh*t. My bad!”
Pernell McPhee is taking his reps seriously during the first two weeks of training camp. The 6-3, 280-pound McPhee has been lights out on several plays including an impressive pass break up today while running stride for stride with fullback Shawn Chapas.
Safeties Matt Elam and Darian Stewart had a rough morning with what looked like communication issues. On a few pass plays that resulted in long gains, the coverage looked busted and both Elam and Stewart were nowhere to be found. On one such play running back Justin Forsett was all alone on the sideline after catching a pass from Tyrod Taylor and trotted easily into the end zone with not one person in pursuit.
