The Ravens’ first string secondary certainly didn’t have their best day of practice on Saturday as the Ravens and 49ers kicked off their first of three joint practices between the two teams.

49ers quarterback Colin Kaepernick feasted on the Ravens defensive backfield, taking advantage of both Chykie Brown and second-year player Matt Elam. Elam was beaten on several plays across the middle of the field by the big-bodied 49er receiving unit.

Brown had another up and down day at the office, giving up some long pass plays but came up with a few big plays of his own. During 11-on-11 drills, Chykie picked off quarterback Blaine Gabbert and forced a fumble on wide receiver Stevie Johnson, which Brown recovered.

Notes & Observations

Ravens linebacker Terrell Suggs was his normal vocal self today. As the veteran entered the practice field he could be heard singing and on several occasions interacted with the fans that were in attendance. Suggs managed to force 49ers quarterback Colin Kaepernick to get rid of the football in a hurry on consecutive plays during 11-on-11 drills.

Pernell McPhee had a nice practice today (albeit against the 49ers second and third team defenses).  McPhee would have notched two sacks on Gabbert and stopped two runs in the 49ers offensive backfield.

Terrence Brooks continus to be third on the depth chart behind Darian Stewart and Jeromy Miles. Brooks did play better today at times but has a long way to go before he challenges Stewart – if at all this season.

C.J. Mosley looks like he could play the 49ers every day. The rookie starting linebacker was strong against the 49ers run offense, making several nice stops and did a nice job in pass defense getting to the outside to stop Vernon Davis from advancing after a quick catch.

The Ravens will hit the practice field once again tomorrow at 12 p.m. for their second practice of the three-day joint sessions with the 49ers.

It might take 4 years before the ravens finally admit Matt Elam sucks. We could save ourselves some time now by signing or trading for a pair of safeties. He cover skills are below average...possibly on par with pollard but his tackling skills are garbage unlike pollard. I don't get the comparisons to donte whitner cuz whitner could takle well and cover despite his size. But elam's size seems to be the root of his bad play IMO. No doubt he is best s we had last year but he was getting hyped cuz he was a first round pick.

Ozzie please keep an eye on the waiver wire constantly checking for any corners that shake lose between now and the start of the opening game. I know you but between injuries and well not very good play I shall say is starting to be the biggest concern for me personally.
