The Baltimore Ravens wrapped up the last of their three joint practices with the 49ers on Monday under sunny skies at the Under Armour Performance Center in Owings Mills.
Today’s practice had a much different feel to it than the last two days as both teams were donned in shorts and shells more like an OTA practice than the end of week two of training camp.Perhaps it was yesterday’s season ending injury to defensive end Kapron Lewis-Moore or both teams were drained from two days of non stop competing against one another.
Leading the news on the defensive side of the football today was rookie safety Terrence Brooks who saw his reps increase on both the first team and second team. Brooks, slated as the team’s third safety behind Darian Stewart and Jeromy Miles per the Ravens most recent depth chart, saw rotating snaps at corner and in the nickel slot cornerback role due to Asa Jackson nursing an ankle injury. Stewart had some ups and downs, but played fairly well including a pass break up on Anquan Boldin early on in practice.
Other News & Observations
Linebacker C.J. Mosley had little problems getting pressure of 49ers quarterback Colin Kaepernick during 11 on 11 drills. The rookie forced two quarterback hurries on consecutive series and continues to look like the real deal that Ravens expected him to be. Mosley stood out also for his run defense, breaking through the 49ers offensive line along with Chris Canty to stop Carlos Hyde in the backfield.
Rookie free agent defensive tackle A.J. Pataiali’i and rookie free agent Levi Brown took snaps with the second team defense in place of Kapron Lewis-Moore. Pataiali’i fared well and has flown under the radar for much of camp but has had some nice practices. Thought more to have been camp bodies, both Brown and A.J. have a chance to make the roster depending on how they play the remainder of the preseason.
DeAngelo Tyson and Timmy Jernigan both stood up to the 49ers quick offense on Monday. Jernigan showed his versatility chasing down quarterback Colin Kaepernick stride for stride to the 49ers sideline. Tyson was quick off the snap and drew two double teams on multiple reps yet still managed to get penetration into the offensive backfield.
Second-year linebacker John Simon finally stood out during camp albeit against the 49ers third team offense. Simon recorded an interception showing his ability to locate the ball in the air and putting himself in to position to frame out the 49ers wideout.
Lardarius Webb (back), Brynden Trawick (back), Terrence Cody (hip) were absent again from practice on Monday.
Not So Good Play of the Day
49ers wide receiver Stevie Johnson beat Ravens cornerback Jimmy Smith for a long gain during seven on seven drills when Smith tripped over his own two feet.
Quote of the Day
“Watch the light-skinned dude.” Terrell Suggs referring to former Ravens wide receiver and current 49ers receiver David Reed on third and five during 11 on 11 drills.
The Ravens will have a day off on Tuesday before beginning preparation for their week 2 preseason match-up against Dallas on Wednesday.
