By most counts Ozzie Newsome & Co. reeled in a nice haul of players from the amateur ranks during the 2016 NFL Draft. But at the end of the day the Ravens didn’t get Jack!

On the surface the Ravens executed their 2016 NFL Draft beautifully. They addressed need while selecting productive football players. There’s little doubt that the team improved, although many are questioning the team’s inability to provide a playmaker in the defensive backfield.

As we were reminded often while watching the draft, the Ravens had only 6 interceptions good for dead last in the NFL. On paper the Ravens improved their pass rush and that alone should bump that anemic pick total. But that doesn’t hide the fact that the team failed to land a playmaker on the back end of the defense.

Another of the team’s questionable moves was passing on Myles Jack in the second round. Time and time again we’ve seen the Ravens take a chance on a second round player. Maybe the player had a character red flag and slipped out of the first round. Maybe there was a medical concern. Maybe they felt the player had first round talent if coached properly.

Players such as Chris Chester, Dan Cody, Sergio Kindle, Paul Kruger, Tim Jernigan and Arthur Brown come to mind.

Yet none of those players possessed the potential upside that Myles Jack does and the Ravens could have had the UCLA Bruin with the 36th overall pick.

Don’t get me wrong, I’m pleased with the Ravens draft but Jack, a player rated by some as the best in the draft, could have been a real difference maker and the perfect complement to CJ Mosley. If only they had taken a risk on him the way they did lesser players in past draft classes.

To their credit the Ravens ultimately parlayed that 36th pick into picks 42, 107 and 146 and those picks became Kamalei Correa, Chris Moore and Matt Judon. In years to come it will be interesting to see how these players perform when compared to Jack.
