Ravens And Cowboys Discussed a First Round Swap

The adrenalin in a draft war room must be off the charts particularly when teams discuss swapping picks. Such discussions took place between the Baltimore Ravens and Dallas Cowboys on Day 1 of the 2016 NFL draft. One day we can all look back and discuss or lament the trade that never happened.

When the Chargers selected Joey Bosa with their No. 1 pick (3rd overall), according to SI’s Peter King, Jerry Jones took pause. He loved Ezekiel Elliott but thought he could get his guy by swapping picks with the Ravens and pick up an important pick that he could parlay with another to move back into Round 1 to draft Paxton Lynch.

So his son Stephen Jones rang Ozzie Newsome.

The Cowboys suspected that the Ravens were interested in Jalen Ramsey. They were right and offered the No. 4 pick to the Ravens, knowing full well that the Jaguars at No. 5, would race to the podium to hand in the card for Ramsey.

To make it happen the teams would have to account for a 200-point trade value differential. The Cowboys wanted the Ravens third-round pick, No. 70 overall, worth 240 points. The Ravens offered their 4th round pick, No. 104 overall, worth 86 points.

Obviously the deal didn’t happen but if it did, it’s conceivable that the Ravens, not the Jaguars would be lauded today for pulling off the unthinkable just 2 weeks ago – landing BOTH Ramsey and Myles Jack who was there for the taking with the Ravens second-round pick, the 36th overall.

This draft will be one we’ll talk about for years, particularly when we look back while assessing the progress of the respective careers of Ronnie Stanley, Ramsey, Jack, Kamalei Correa and Bronson Kaufusi, the player the Ravens would have sacrificed to get Ramsey.

What fun it must be to sit in one of those NFL war rooms.
