A year after retiring from the NFL to get his life in order, Rolando McClain appears to be ready to return to football.

According to a source close to McClain, the linebacker is in a better place mentally, has been working out regularly and has been telling people since at least the fall that he plans to play football in 2014.

McClain retired in May at the age of 23 after he was arrested for the third time in a 17-month period. He said in a statement at the time, “I love football, but I have decided at this time it is in my best interest to focus on getting my personal life together.”

EDITOR’S NOTE: Back in October RSR’s Tony Lombardi touched on the topic of a possible McClain comeback. Since that time a team source when asked about the possible return of McClain simply replied, “I don’t know” but left the door open for said return.

Might the release of Jameel McClain be the first sign of such a return?

Given the recent off-the-field legal incidents involving Ray Rice, Deonte Thompson and Jah Reid affect the Ravens’ willingness to accept McClain’s sincerity?

EDITOR’S NOTE 2: In 2013 Rolando McClain signed a 1 year deal for $700,000. The deal had no bonus money and no guarantees. If he does come back the Ravens hold his rights to that contract through the 2014 season. (updated at 3:03PM)
