“Arthur Brown is going to be a difference maker”

As my fellow colleague Logan Quick pointed out in his latest post “Heavyweight Title Fight: Mosley vs. Brown”, the Ravens will certainly have their share of competition at the linebacker position this summer particularly between C.J. Mosley and Arthur Brown.

During the recent Q&A session with Ravens assistant general manager Eric DeCosta presented by Pressboxonline.com at Mothers Grille of Federal Hill, I had the opportunity to address this very topic with Eric.

With his straight-to-the-point style, DeCosta admitted it probably sounds odd to some fans as the team opted to select Mosley even after they spent a second round draft pick on Arthur Brown in 2013.

DeCosta was however quick to shrug off that the selection of Mosley was a knock on either Brown or veteran Daryl Smith.

“A couple of years ago we had the slowest set of linebackers in the league. Now we have the fastest linebackers in the league,” DeCosta acknowledged.

“Arthur Brown is going to make a huge jump and be a difference maker. A lot of people get frustrated by this but a lot of times guys don’t come out and play a lot as rookies. Arthur is explosive, aggressive, a little bit undersized. He is going to fit into a lot of different packages this year. As good of a player as Daryl Smith is, he’s getting up there in age and that isn’t a knock on Daryl but we want depth at the position. If you look at the best defenses in football they share one quality, really good linebackers.”

We have seen it in the past when the Ravens have relied very little on rookies to make an instant impact.  DeCosta was quick to point out a few examples.

“We’ve had a lot of good players over the years, look at Arthur Jones. Arthur Jones just made $6 million a year and he barely played as a rookie. Think about Jarret Johnson, he also barely played as a rookie.”

As the Ravens are set to begin their first three day OTA’s this week, time will tell just what role Arthur Brown will play in 2014, something that RSR expanded upon this weekend.

That said DeCosta and the Ravens along with the team’s 2nd round pick in 2013, aren’t conceding to Mosley simply because of his first round draft status.

“Arthur Brown isn’t going to hand him [Mosley] anything. We are going to have really good competition with our linebackers and it’s only going to make our defense stronger.”

Which pairing is most likely to be the starting inside linebacker tandem for the Ravens by Week 17?
Smith and Mosley (65%)
Smith and Brown (11%)
Mosley and Brown (24%)

One Rave about ““Arthur Brown is going to be a difference maker”

This is shaping up as one of the top defenses in the league. We have exceptional talent and playmakers all over the field and we are deep as well. This could easily be one of the best Raven defenses in many years. There just don’t seem to be many weak spots. I can’t even name the starting lineup as it seems we will rotate so many quality players it is almost unimportant. That’s real depth.
Now…….if they would just pick up Eric Winston to complete an excellent offensive line we might be able to have an offense that can stay on the field for a few minutes and keep the D fresh. Just hoping…..
