About Brian McFarland

Brian McFarland

Known on Ravens Message Boards as "B-more Ravor", Brian is a life-long Baltimorean and an avid fan of the Ravens and all Baltimore sports.  A PSL holder since 1998, Brian has garnered a reputation as a cap-guru because of his strange (actually warped) desire to wade through the intricacies of the NFL's salary cap and actually make sense of it for those of us who view it as inviting as IRS Tax Code.      Brian, who hails from Catonsville, MD and still resides there, is married and has two children.

Jameel McClain Takes a Pay Cut

NFL: Baltimore Ravens at Cleveland Browns
Last week in this column it was suggested that the Ravens may consider releasing LB Jameel McClain due to his continued unavailability stemming from a neck injury suffered late last season. It now appears that the team and McClain had another option in mind.  NFLPA records indicate that McClain has taken a $1.5M reduction in what was to be his $3M base salary for this season.  His base salary now stands at $1.5M. McClain’s 2013 Cap number had been set to be $4.2M, but will now be $2.7M.  It is...

Projecting the Ravens Opening Day Salary Cap – Version 2.0

Mellette
A little over 2 weeks ago, we took our first crack at projecting where the Ravens’ Salary Cap would stand as of the first week of the season. Since then, the Ravens have lost TE Dennis Pitta to a hip injury, have signed a back-up TE to replace Pitta and have re-signed FB Vonta Leach. Those moves have left the team with $4,384,459 in Salary Cap space under the Rule of 51. Once the season starts, however, all players – those on the 53-man rosters, Injured Reserve (IR), Physically Unable...

Might the Ravens Release McClain?

NFL: Baltimore Ravens at Houston Texans
Late last season, the Ravens were forced to place LB Jameel McClain on the Injured Reserve (IR) list due to a serious neck/spinal injury. This ended an up and down season for McClain, who was in the first year of a new 3-year contract signed last March. McClain had earned that contract with a relatively solid 2011 campaign during which he appeared to emerge as the next in line of solid sidekicks for future Hall of Famer, Ray Lewis. Instead, 2012 saw his play slip and his spot largely taken...

Oops He Did it Again!

Asa Podium
Last week we learned that Ravens CB Asa Jackson has again been suspended for violating the NFL’s ban on performance enhancing drugs. While it appears that Jackson’s suspension arose from Jackson’s failure to follow procedures, as opposed to an intent to circumvent the rules, the bottom line is still the same – Jackson will be suspended for the first 8 games of the season. This is Jackson’s second suspension within the past 8 months, as Jackson was first suspended for 4 games last December for violating the same league policy....

SALARY CAP UPDATE: Details of Vonta Leach’s New Deal

money_ball copy
The details of Vonta Leach’s new contract have finally been fully reported. As reported here first, Leach’s base salaries will be $840K (2013) and $1.75M (2014).  His 2013 Cap number will be $1.47M. According to Aaron Wilson of the Baltimore Sun, Leach received a Signing Bonus of $1.16M and has 2013 Incentives of $50K. Given that the incentives do count against the 2013 Cap, they would be Likely To Be Earn Incentives, meaning that Leach reached those statistical benchmarks in 2012.  If Leach fails to earn those incentives this season, the...

P.U.P. List For Dummies

Marshal Yanda Sidelines 600
NFL teams’ intentions are too often misunderstood when they assign players to the Physically Unable to Perform (“PUP”) List. And the culprits are oftentimes the media outlets covering the teams. They may present Marshal Yanda’s appearance on the PUP List to elicit shock or surprise amongst the fan base leading to unnecessarily worrisome concerns with the ultimate goal of course being to sell more newspapers, entice more web traffic or achieve greater audiences on radio and TV. Then again it could simply be ignorance. To help clear up any misconceptions,...

Why NFL Players and Teams Consider Injury Settlements

Pittman Injury Settlement
As the Ravens patiently wait to see if Jameel McClain will be medically cleared to return to the practice field, a potential injury settlement with the Ravens linebacker has to at least be in the back of Ozzie Newsome’s thoughts and perhaps the notion is working its way to the front of the GM’s cerebral cortex. To help explain why teams and players sometimes agree on such a settlement, I offer up this from our own Brian McFarland’s 24×7 NFL Glossary. ~ Tony Lombardi   Injury Settlement – In the...

Projecting the Ravens’ Salary Cap status at start of 2013 season

money_ball copy
Now that first-round pick, Matt Elam, has finally agreed to terms, the Ravens pre-Training Camp Salary Cap – barring another move over the next couple of days – appears to be set.  With Elam now in the fold, the Ravens are set to enter Training Camp with $5,299,459 in available Salary Cap space. That sounds like a decent amount of Cap space, but that number is a bit misleading because, under the Rule of 51 that applies at this time of the league year, only the highest 51 Salary Cap...

RAVENS SALARY CAP: Leach a Victim of “Moneyball”?

Vonta Leach Goodbye
With yesterday’s news that the Ravens were going to release (or trade) fullback Vonta Leach, many have been searching for answers as to why the Ravens front office feels they must release him. The news has led many to wonder if there is another move coming and many are aiming high with thoughts of the Ravens acquiring one of the Giant’s disgruntled wide receivers, Hakeem Nicks or Victor Cruz. However, the reality is that the Ravens decision to part ways with Leach is likely rooted in two more simple –...

Ravens Earn Four Compensatory Picks in 2014

Kruger Browns
With June 1st now passed, the Ravens will be receiving 4 Compensatory Draft picks in next May’s draft. Under the NFL’s Comp Pick rules, if a team loses more qualifying Unrestricted Free Agents (UFA) than it signs, the team will be awarded Comp Picks for the difference in those two numbers (up to a maximum of 4). In order for a free agent to count for Comp Pick purposes, though, he must be a true UFA, which means that his contract with his prior team has expired. As such, any...

SALARY CAP NOTES: The Peculiar Case of Ed Dickson

Ed Dickson TD v Saints 600
PRESENT SALARY CAP STATUS: With S Matt Elam and NT Brandon Williams being the only remaining unsigned draft picks, the Ravens are currently $1,803,573 under the Salary Cap. Once Elam and Williams have signed, the Ravens will be down to $951,459 in Salary Cap space. However, as of June 2nd, the Ravens will receive an additional $2.5M in Salary Cap space due to designating the March release of S Bernard Pollard as a post-June 1 release. THE PECULIAR CASE OF TE ED DICKSON: Last week, upon their arrival at the...

SALARY CAP ANALYSIS: Breaking Down the Rookie Contracts

baltimore-ravens-2013-draft-600x400
With the advent of the new rookie wage scale contained in the NFL’s 2011 CBA, much of the mystery of rookie contracts has been removed. With the new system largely being a slotted system, signings are happening much quicker and holdouts are few and far between. Also, with the overall league Salary Cap having increased at such a minimal rate, players are receiving the same Signing Bonus as the player taken with the same pick in the prior year’s draft. The following is a breakdown of the contracts of the...

Post-draft Ravens “Rookie Cap” update

show_me_the_money
According to Aaron Wilson of the Baltimore Sun, the Ravens will have a “Year One Rookie Allocation” of $5.517M.  This is the team’s “rookie cap” (as it was referred to prior to the 2011 CBA) and encompasses the 2013 Cap numbers of the Ravens’ 10 draft picks. Once signed, the estimated Cap number for each player is as follows: Matt Elam: $1.23M Arthur Brown: $646K Brandon Williams: $534K John Simon: $502K Kyle Juszczyk: $480K Ricky Wagner: $441K Kapron Lewis-Moore: $427K Ryan Jensen: $425K Aaron Mellette: $416K Marc Anthony: $416K Under...

Explaining how the “Rookie Salary Cap” actually works

money_ball copy
In the days following this week’s NFL draft, the league will announce each team’s “Year One Rookie Allocation” (formerly known as the “Rookie Pool” or “Rookie Salary Cap”).  This is an oft misunderstood number, because while it is part of the team’s Salary Cap, it does not have a dollar-for-dollar impact on the team’s overall Salary Cap. The Rookie Salary Cap is often referred to as “a cap within a cap” because it limits the amount that teams can allocate to their rookies in the year they were drafted (and...

Boldin has been off the Ravens’ Salary Cap since March 12

Boldin SBXLVII
The idea that the Ravens’ Salary Cap has been adversely affected while awaiting WR Aquan Boldin’s return from Africa to take his physical with the 49ers, has been an issue that has greatly frustrated many Ravens fans. As it turns out, it was never an issue at all and the initial reporting (from ProFootballTalk, and repeated, apparently without confirmation, by many others) that the trade wasn’t complete until Boldin passed his physical was totally inaccurate. First, the official NFL transactions report disclosed the trade as being completed on March 12th...

Ravens expected to receive four compensatory picks

Roger_Goodell_2011_NFL_Draft_RfYgktlpQohl
Reports indicate that the NFL will announce the award of Compensatory Draft picks for 2013 at some point on Monday. Based on their free agent losses last offseason, the Ravens are expected to receive four (4) Compensatory Draft picks for the next month’s NFL draft. This would push the team’s total number of draft picks to 12, including the team’s 7 regular draft picks and “undisclosed” draft pick (per the official NFL transaction report) from San Francisco for Anquan Boldin. Compensatory Draft picks are awarded to teams that suffer a...

Pollard Release Saves Only $500K in Cap Space Until June 1

Pollard Podium
Pollard Release with “June 1st” Designation According to the NFL’s official transactions report, the Ravens’ release of Safety Bernard Pollard was made with a “Post June 1 Designation”.  This means that Pollard will remain on the Ravens Salary Cap until June 1, at which time the team will receive the Cap savings from his release. First a little background on the difference between a pre-June 1st release and a post-June 1st release. When a player is released prior to June 1st, the team is relieved of having to count the player’s base...

Ravens have busy first day of Free Agency

money_ball copy
Yesterday was a busy day for the Ravens, albeit, with mixed results.  The Ravens did get a lot of work done in shaping their roster and getting their Salary Cap in order, but they lost out on their No. 1 target, when linebacker Dannell Ellerbe signed a 5-year, $35M contract to join the Miami Dolphins. While that contract was certainly more than the Ravens were willing to spend – and a somewhat shocking amount for a player with less than a season’s worth of starts over his 4 NFL seasons...

Ravens 2013 Salary Cap and Free Agency Primer

Cap 3 600
Now that Joe Flacco’s contract has been resolved, it’s much easier to give an accurate forecast of where the Ravens will stand when the 2013 league year begins on next Tuesday at 4:00 pm.  So, with that in mind, here’s a look at the Ravens’ 2013 Free Agency and Salary Cap status:  PLAYERS UNDER CONTRACT:  The Ravens presently have the following 48 players under contract for 2013 (with Salary Cap numbers indicated): QBs (2):  Joe Flacco ($6.8M), Tyrod Taylor ($581K) RBs (4):  Ray Rice ($5.75M), Bernard Pierce ($619K), Vonta Leach...

Breaking down the early reports on Flacco’s new deal

flaccodelivers
So, they got it done! Joe Flacco and the Ravens have hammered out a long term deal to avoid the dreaded Franchise Tag and provide the team with some much needed Salary Cap space for 2013. At 1:30 this afternoon, Flacco will sign the deal that makes him – for now – the highest paid player in NFL history. The team will hold a celebratory press conference to coronate Flacco as their “elite” cornerstone quarterback. There is no question the deal is huge and that it had to get done,...
