Cleveland Browns

Manziel vs. the Ravens?

We all love to talk about Johnny Manziel and what he can do – but how will we feel when we list the possibility of him coming in against the Ravens?

Last week in the team’s win against the Saints, Kyle Shanahan went with the Manziel package for just a handful of plays, to no success – if that makes you feel any better.

The offense usually lines Manziel up in the pistol formation and lets him either hand the ball up the middle to a guy like Terrence West, or roll him out for a pass in the flat (like we saw last week.)

Overall, Dean Pees and his unit shouldn’t be too worried about seeing anyone else but Brian Hoyer under center. While they’ll still prepare for it, we probably won’t see it too much on Sunday afternoon.

Previewing Week Two

The Browns are going to attack the Ravens in a variety of ways on offense. We’ll have an in-depth breakdown of things you need to know heading into Sunday tomorrow, but here’s the outline of what you’ll see from Cleveland on offense:

  • Watch out for Andrew Hawkins. The Browns clearly have their go-to guy this year, and their new weapon from Cincy is just that.
  • Fullback Ray Agnew is going to get a ton of playing time. Look for him to be a wrecking ball in the run game.
  • The pistol formation isn’t just a college formation. Cleveland likes it, and they’ll use it often on Sunday – even with Hoyer.
  • Hoyer’s deep ball has issues. He can’t sling it like many QBs down the field – something we saw against the Saints – so don’t expect the offense to burn the Ravens defensive backs.

Jermaine Gresham

Cincinnati Bengals

Tight End Moves

ESPN’s Coley Harvey reported on Tuesday that the Bengals made some adjustments to the tight end spot on the depth chart. Here’s how it all breaks down:

Tyler Eifert is already on the “short term” IR, so he’ll be out for awhile.
Veteran Alex Smith on the IR after a triceps injury
Signed free-agent Kevin Brock, who was with the team in camp
Cut Ryan Otten from the practice squad

So, it’s safe to say Tuesday was a pretty big day for tight ends in Cincy. Trying to replace Eifert won’t happen, but the Bengals will do their best with a combination of Jermaine Gresham and the young guys.

Previewing Week Two

The Bengals get the advantage of playing at home next week, and the foe doesn’t pose too much of a threat to the potential of Cincinnati starting 3-0.

The Tennessee Titans will come into town ready to knock them off, but I still can’t trust Jake Locker enough to put together a strong outing. He’s doing a fairly efficient job this season (40 for 67 overall), but he’s yet to find a dangerous go-to guy

A few guys to watch in this one come at the running back spot. Veteran Shonn Green and rookie Bishop Sankey can combine to be a very strong duo – one that the Bengals front could have a hard time stopping. At the receiver spot, don’t be shocked to see a big load of targets heading Justin Hunter’s way.

Gilbert struggles early

It’s been normal for the Steelers to have to deal with poor offensive line play in the past. Ben Roethlisberger is used to being on his backside more often than not. With offensive tackle Marcus Gilbert struggling as a bookend on the right side of the offensive line, Mike Tomlin has to keep his eye out for potential replacements.

Gilbert has given up multiple sacks in both games he’s played so far this season, but Tomlin appears to be sticking with the young tackle moving forward. Here’s a quote from ESPN:

“I’m not concerned about Marcus and his ability to rebound,” Tomlin said Tuesday at his weekly news conference. “I expect him to come back fighting like Rocky.”

Interestingly enough, Steeler fans heading into the season thought the left side of the line would be the one with the problems…

Previewing Week Two

Sunday Night Football is going to get fun this week.

The Panthers will host the Steelers on NBC, looking to improve their record to 3-0 on the season.

Cam Newton will look to have another great game after posting a line of 22-34/281 yards/1 TD/0 INT last week. Look for him to target rookie receiver Kelvin Benjamin early and often. The former Florida State Seminole has been an early standout and should receive the bulk of the targets at the receiver spot this week.

Pittsburgh has won their last four regular season meetings against the Panthers.
