Brown vs. Jackson Promises to be a Battle this Summer

Much has been made about the opportunity Ravens cornerbacks Asa Jackson and Chykie Brown will have this offseason.

After Corey Graham left via free agency, the Ravens chose not to address the open nickel cornerback position in the draft, opening the door for what promises to be an exciting competition this summer between these two young players.

As of Wednesday however, there isn’t any clear cut leader at this point as both players took reps with the first team defense during the second round of offseason team activities. Brown and Jackson look to be in incredible shape; both players appear extremely fast while learning the defense that Dean Pees runs.

While Chykie has limited experience, he did play in a few defensive packages in 2012 after injuries presented him the opportunity.

For Jackson in 2013, his inexperience wasn’t due to on field performance but rather the eight-game suspension the league imposed on him for violating the NFL performance-enhancing drug policy.

On Wednesday though, Brown had some ups and downs and did give up a touchdown to new Ravens wide receiver Steve Smith Sr. on a slant play. Jackson seemingly held his own during the open practice.

The similarities between Brown and Jackson are jarring. Their builds, their experience playing on special teams, even their 40-yard dash times – on paper, neither has much of an advantage.

It’s still early, and OTAs are just the beginning of what promises to be a fun summer watching these two hungry young cornerbacks compete. May the best cornerback win!
