Camp Notes: Friday, July 26th

B-Mac dropped the Big Mac’s

After being held out of practice yesterday due to weight concerns, left tackle Bryant McKinnie joined his teammates for the second full day of training camp.

McKinnie had agreed when he re-signed with the Ravens to play lighter than his 2012 playing weight of 352 pounds. As you can see in the picture below, for a 6-8 athlete that doesn’t play in the NBA, McKinnie doesn’t look that bad.

Secondary Standouts

Ravens fans were pleasantly surprised with cornerback Corey Graham’s contributions last season in the absence of Lardarius Webb. Heck, Graham even became Broncos quarterback Peyton Manning’s favorite target during the AFC Divisional Playoff game. Graham broke up a few of quarterback Joe Flacco’s passes today and stood out amongst the notable corners on the roster.

One guy you haven’t heard of yet is rookie seventh-round pick (247th overall) Marc Anthony. Out of all of the secondary members, Anthony was the shining star of practice today. During three different occasions, Anthony made great breaks on the ball to bat away passes and would have had a fourth if not for a stellar catch by tight end Dennis Pitta.

It was only one good practice for the former California Golden Bear, but it was definitely a performance to build upon.

Joe Flacco Is Throwing Lasers

Joe Flacco has been on point so far this training camp. Mistakes are bound to happen, but they’ve been few and far between for the Ravens’ gunslinger.

Regardless of the receiver, Flacco is putting the ball where it needs to be, and he’s making the jobs of his receivers a whole lot easier.

After practice, I caught up with Tandon Doss and asked him about the passes he’s been hauling in from Flacco.

“He’s been carrying everything over [from last year],” Doss said. “He’s been on point.”

“You always expect the ball to be placed where it needs to be. He knows where to place the ball very well against the defense and I just have confidence in him.”

Drop and Give Me Ten

The lasting impression of Ray Lewis on the Ravens franchise is certainly evident in the first training camp in franchise history without their iconic linebacker. During practices, if a player on defense makes a major mistake or drops an interception opportunity, they are supposed to drop down to the ground and do pushups.

During 11-on-11 drills, linebacker Josh Bynes made a really good read on a pass from Flacco intended for tight end Ed Dickson. Bynes jumped in front of Dickson for what would have easily been an interception returned for a touchdown, but bobbled the ball until it hit the ground.

Bynes then dropped, did his pushups and returned to the huddle as the fans in attendance laughed and then applauded Bynes for his efforts.

Lets Hit Somebody!

I was able to receive confirmation that Saturday’s training camp practice will be the first in full pads. As part of the newest Collective Bargaining Agreement, teams are not allowed to have contact drills during the first two days of training camp. Knowing the style of coach Harbaugh, it’s no surprise that he’ll have his team in pads as soon as he’s allowed to.
