CAMP NOTES: Running Game on Point, Wenning Improves

Keith Wenning
Quarterback Keith Wenning during training camp: Baltimore Ravens

The Baltimore Ravens concluded their last open-to-the-public practice of 2014 training camp with practice being held under the lights at the Navy-Marine Corps Stadium in Annapolis, Maryland.

In preparation for Thursday nights game against the San Francisco 49ers, third string quarterback Keith Wenning had his best practice yet by far. Throughout the first two weeks of camp, Wenning, the Ravens 2014 sixth-round draft pick, has been anything but spectacular. His arm strength was on full display last night, something that hasn’t been seen on the practice field up until now. His best pass of the night was a 60-yard touchdown to wide receiver Deonte Thompson.

Notes & Observations

The Law firm of Smith & Smith (Torrey Smith, Steve Smith Sr.) receiving combo put on a show for all in attendance Monday night. The duo made incredible catches during one-on-one drills as well as full team 11-on-11 drills. Smith Sr. continued his trend of making opposing defensive backs miss. This time it was Asa Jackson on the receiving end of a juke move that left him on the turf while Smith Sr. scored easily.

Ray Rice and the other backs ran with ease as the offensive line continued to improve on the new run blocking system. Rice and Justin Forsett had big gains from both sides of the revamped line. Rick Wagner had several key blocks including a nice swing block on Arthur Brown.

Jah Reid made his presence known last night when he and linebacker Courtney Upshaw mixed it up during full team drills. Reid has been quietly having a nice camp thus far and making a case for a roster spot behind Wagner. Reid is competing with David Mims and Brett Van Sloten.

Kicker Justin Tucker went 5/6 on field goal attempts last night with his only miss coming from 68 yards.

Not Practicing

Rookie wide receiver Michael Campanaro missed his second consecutive day of practice with a rib injury while guard Will Rackley again missed practice due to a concussion.
