CAMP NOTES: Suggs With the Quote of the Day

The defense was again rough and tough donned in pads and made the offense earn every play on Sunday at the Under Armour Performance Center in Owings Mills.

With cornerback Lardarius Webb out with a back issue, Asa Jackson got the reps once again with the first team defense. The extended reps for Jackson are proving pivotal for the young cornerback who is making every snap count. The 5-10 back had another nice practice on Sunday doing a solid job of turning his head and locating the football in coverage.

Jackson displayed several nice pass break ups on the day including one against the big bodied Owen Daniels. Jackson also intercepted a pass from quarterback Joe Flacco, but did give up a touchdown to Marlon Brown while in coverage. Clearly the front runner for the third cornerback position, Jackson should see a lot of reps against the 49ers in the teams first preseason game on Thurday night.

Other Notes & Observations

Chykie Brown fared much better today just one day removed from feeling the wrath of head coach John Harbaugh. Brown was more physical at the line of scrimmage making the wide receivers fight even harder for separation. Brown did get beat on occasion, notably by Steve Smith Sr., but he rebounded nicely including a stripping the football from the veteran receiver as he attempted to run up the field after the catch.

Daryl Smith (groin) was absent again for the defense. Josh Bynes, along with Arthur Brown, shared reps with the first team. Brown continued his trend of being solid in pass coverage. He was quick getting Bernard Pierce after he caught a pass out of the backfield for no gain and had two passes defended including one against Torrey Smith.

Pernell McPhee is proving to be a force to be reckoned with in both blitzing and stopping the run. McPhee found himself in the backfield on multiple reps where he blasted running back Justin Forsett attempting to sneak past him and manhandled Jah Reid for a sack on quarterback Tyrod Taylor.

Tempers flared on the second and third team defense as linebacker Albert McClellan and right tackle Brett Van Sloten mixed it up following a block by Van Sloten on a blitz. Safety Brynden Trawick and tight end Phillp Supernaw also were involved in an altercation following a run play.

Rookie defensive tackle Timmy Jernigan returned to practice from a back injury in which he suffered on the same play as defensive end Brent Urban’s season ending ACL injury.

Quote of the Day

“It’s Kubiak’s offense, watch the screen.” Linebacker Terrell Suggs to his teammates on third down during 11 on 11 drills.

Absent From Practice

Daryl Smith (groin) and Lardarius Webb (back) were not present for practice.

Linebacker Elvis Dumervil was not on the field practicing and is believed to have been given the day off.
