Castillo makes Ravens O-line higher tech

O line v Patriots AFCC 2013

Juan Castillo has a bureaucratic kind of title for a football coach: run game coordinator. But to the Ravens offensive linemen who hear from him at each practice, he’s no bureaucrat.

“His passion for the game is very evident,” center Gino Gradkowski told BaltimoreRavens.com. “I think it’s contagious. Guys are buying into his passion, his energy.”

Castillo could be called something of a technician for the way he’s working on shoring up the line.

“He focuses on our technique, and that’s something that I kind of get away from sometimes,” tackle Bryant McKinnie said. “Right now is a great time for us to work on our technique. …  So, Juan’s been a great help.”

Castillo came to the Ravens late last season after being fired in October by the Eagles. In a much-criticized move, then-Philadelphia head coach Andy Reid had promoted Castillo to defensive coordinator in 2011 after he had spent 13 years as offensive line coach.

Now, he’s working alongside offensive line coach Andy Moeller, especially when it comes to helping shape younger players.

“I really enjoyed developing players, and I think that’s something that throughout my career at Philadelphia that I’ve done,” Castillo said.

“He tries to simplify everything as best he can,” Gradkowski said. “I know Coach Moeller built me a great foundation my first year. Coach Castillo, I think, is just taking my game to the next level, and I’m very excited about where I’m going as a player. I think a lot of players feel the same way.”
