NFL Replacement Officials continue to struggle

replacementrefs
Last year, during the NFL Lockout, the players and the league couldn’t agree on a deal. This year, the referees and the league can’t. Because of this, the league has been forced to used replacement officials until both sides can work out a deal. At first, it was just supposed to be for the preseason, but now it’s guaranteed that we’ll be having replacements officiating at least for the start of the regular season. The 2012 NFL preseason has been full of mistakes and miscues made by these replacement officials....

NFL CUTS: How does the league’s waiver system work?

TO_seahawks
How Does The NFL’s Waiver System Work? As the third week of the NFL preseason comes to a close, the time has come for teams to make their first round of roster cuts.  Teams have until 4:00 p.m. on Monday to reduce their present rosters of 90 players down to 75. When viewing the NFL waiver wire, there are 4 designations that come into play, each with different ramifications.  Often, these designations are confused when reported in the press or simply labeled with the generic moniker “cut”, but there are...

NFL NEWS & NOTES: A possible rarity…a Raven becomes a Steeler?

matt-katula-11-card
Former Baltimore Ravens long snapper Matt Katula could be returning to the AFC North division. The Pittsburgh Steelers tried out Katula on Wednesday, according to a league source. Katula, 29, played in five games last season for the Minnesota Vikings, filling in when Cullen Loeffler broke a bone in his lower back. A former Wisconsin player, Katula played with the Ravens from 2005 to 2009 and played eight games two years ago for the New England Patriots. For his career, the 6-foot-6, 265-pounder has played in 93 games.  … The...

2012 could be a bumpy ride for Steelers

05-09-17_todd-haley_420
Make no mistake about it – the Steelers are Ben Roethlisberger’s team! He is without a doubt, like it or not, the poster child for all things Black & Gold. Roethlisberger is many things. He’s tough, gritty, determined and relentless. That said, Ben is also a bit unorthodox and he’s not the most technically sound quarterback. He isn’t the cleanest when it comes to his 3, 5 and 7 step drops. He doesn’t have a very quick release. He isn’t consistent when asked to deliver passes into tight windows and...

Ravens sign DT McBean

ryan_mcbean
The Baltimore Ravens have announced that they have signed defensive tackle Ryan McBean. McBean has played the last 3 seasons in Denver after serving on their practice squad for a season. According to 24×7′s Aaron Wilson the deal is for 1 year. McBean was originally drafted in the fourth round in 2007 by the Pittsburgh Steelers with the 132nd overall pick. The 28 year old McBean has 77 career tackles to go with 4 sacks. Perhaps more importantly for the Ravens, McBean registered 33 of those tackles and all 4...

Midwestern State lineman Amini Silatolu is no secret

AminiSilatolu_display_image_original
OWINGS MILLS — Midwestern State offensive guard Amini Silatolu visited or had private workouts with the Kansas City Chiefs, Cincinnati Bengals, Dallas Cowboys, St. Louis Rams, Pittsburgh Steelers, Detroit Lions, Cleveland Browns, Indianapolis Colts and the Carolina Panthers. Among the other teams that are logical fits for Silatolu or have displayed interested in him: the Baltimore Ravens, San Francisco 49ers, San Diego Chargers, New England Patriots, New York Giants, Washington Redskins and the Houston Texans. The 6-foot-4, 311-pounder starred at the Division II level at the Wichita Falls, Texas school...

An ideal reunion

Jason_Brown
NFL Network’s Jason La Canfora reported that the Ravens made a modest, one-year offer to C/G Jason Brown. If Brown — who has other options to weigh — accepts the offer, it could be an ideal reunion for both sides. Brown is coming off a disappointing stint with St. Louis. With a one-year deal, he would have a chance to redeem himself for a better contact in 2013. Moreover, coming back to Baltimore would be a prime opportunity in a familiar setting. For the Ravens, Browns presents a viable replacement...

Ravens rumored to be high on HBO’s Hard Knocks wish list

Harbaugh_Brothers_1
One of the biggest casualties during the NFL lockout was the popular HBO series Hard Knocks. Having such an uncertainty about the potential labor situation staring teams in the face, no franchise would commit to the filming of the series. Now that no labor unrest is possible until 2020, HBO is planning on bringing the series back in a big way. According to FoxSports.com’s Adam Schein, one of the potential targets of the network is the Baltimore Ravens. Per Schein, HBO has extended an offer to the New York Jets...

Mo’ Money, Mo’ Problems

Sapp-and-Shockey-630x407
The past few weeks haven’t been kind to former NFL star and current NFL Network analyst Warren Sapp. First, the potential Hall of Fame defensive tackle came under fire for baselessly accusing former Saint Jeremy Shockey for “ being the rat” in the New Orleans bounty scandal. Now Sapp is under fire for a different reason – he’s broke and owes people money. According to CNNSI, Sapp has filed for Chapter 7 bankruptcy in Florida.  A player who was once among the top paid defensive players in the game has...

The problem with recent quarterbacks chosen #1 overall

andrew-luck-colts
Cam Newton, Sam Bradford, Matthew Stafford, JaMarcus Russell, Alex Smith, Eli Manning, Carson Palmer, David Carr, Michael Vick, Tim Couch, Peyton Manning.  Only the Manning brothers have won Super Bowls of the people on that list.  Add in Cam Newton’s very good rookie season if you’d like, but only time will tell.  Vick has been a good quarterback, but I wouldn’t say the Falcons got quite what they had hoped out of that draft pick.  Now that we’ve removed those four guys, let’s revisit that list.  Bradford, Stafford, Russell, Smith,...

Are the Jets about to crash?

tebow-footrub
Rex Ryan came onto the scene in New York like a new sheriff ready to clean up someone else’s mess. And early on he did exactly that. He put the fun back in football for New York Jets fans, bringing laughter, cheer and wins. Wigs, snacks, a foul mouth, bird flipping and foot fetishes aside Ryan brought bravado and hope to Gang Green. Now hope borders on despair. Looking back on his days with the Baltimore Ravens as the beloved defensive coordinator serving under Brian Billick and later John Harbaugh,...

A 24×7 EXCLUSIVE: Sean Payton’s Testimony

seanpayton
Profootball24x7.com has been able to secure a copy of sworn testimony given during NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell’s interrogation of Sean Payton and the Bounty Gate scandal as recorded by a league appointed clerk stenographer. Roger Goodell: Sean, earlier you testified that you had no idea of any bounties being placed on the heads of opposing players and that it was really a concept brought up in jest. Later you said that just to be certain you ordered Coach Gregg Williams to not engage in any practice of bounty hunting. Was...

Goodell’s Punishment of Saints Bounties Sends Strong Message

payton
Well, it seems safe to say that “bounties” in the NFL are now officially a thing of the past. After the penalties that Commissioner Roger Goodell handed down to the New Orleans Saints today – penalties the likes of which are pretty much unprecedented in professional football – no player, coach, general manager, ball boy, or locker room attendant will likely ever again have the gumption to try to bribe one player to take out another using monetary rewards. The punishments, as doled out from upon high in the NFL’s...

Nakamura Signs With Carolina Panthers

ruki
On Thursday, it was reported that Ravens free agent safety Haruki Nakamura was visiting the Carolina Panthers. Nakamura, a spot player and special teams ace during his four-year run in Baltimore, was said to be looking for a situation where he could contribute more on defense; if not competing for a starting spot then at least being in the regular rotation more than he was with the Ravens. After contributing moderately in 2010, Nakamura was seemingly the odd man out of the Baltimore secondary in 2011, playing only 39 defensive...

Zibby Heads to Indy

zibby1
Nearly two months after leaving Baltimore to become the head coach of the Indianapolis Colts, former defensive coordinator Chuck Pagano’s influence is still impacting the Ravens. Three of the five free agents to leave Baltimore for “greener” pastures have had ties to the Pagano brothers. Earlier this morning, Haruki Nakamura signed a three-year deal with the Carolina Panthers, which had most Ravens fans feeling that Ozzie Newsome would turn his attention to resigning their other backup safety, Tom Zbikowski. That wasn’t the case. The Ravens have lost their second free...

The Peyton Manning Tour

manning_billboard_football_flad101_web563302
For a team that stunk up every field they stepped on this year, the Indianapolis Colts sure have been in the spotlight quite a bit. First there was the Peyton Manning injury. Then there was the story of how bad the Colts were without Peyton Manning. Then there was all the talk about whether or not Peyton Manning would return to play in 2011. Then there was talk about whether Peyton Manning would ever play again. And so it went that way throughout the 2011 regular season. Enter the post...

RG3 Is Coming to DC

RG3-in-DC-tee-e1331390373236
The Washington Redskins have made one of their biggest gambles in franchise history. Late last night, the Redskins traded three first-round picks and a second-round selection to the St. Louis Rams for what most people believe will be the services of 2011 Heisman Trophy winner, Robert Griffin III. Dan Snyder & Co. have been known to roll the dice and for the most part, they have crapped out. Spending a lot of money on players like Albert Haynesworth and Donovan McNabb are risky moves but giving away so many early...
