Training Camp Day 1

flaccocamp1

The dog days of summer are upon us and football season is back as training camp officially began on Tuesday.

For the first two days of camp (Tuesday and Wednesday) rookies, quarterbacks and injured players were required to be present as the team worked out in shells during the first day of practice. Along with a few questionable absences of lower tier players, there were some other noteworthy participants in attendance.

Lardarius Webb

Rehabbing his second torn ACL in four seasons, cornerback Lardarius Webb was more than just a spectator as he participated during practice. Webb started out with individual drills and even worked himself in on a limited basis covering wide receivers as the teams went to a more uptempo two minute drill.

After practice, head coach John Harbaugh said that Webb wouldn’t be placed on the Physically Unable to Perform (PUP) list.

“Lardarius is practicing and we’ll bring him along where we see fit,” said Harbaugh.

Defensive Line – Haloti Ngata and Terrence Cody

Limited prior to training camp while rehabbing, both Haloti Ngata and Terrence Cody practiced today. Cody is often criticized for his weight, but didn’t appear to be out of shape judging from the limited contract drills he engaged in.

Ngata’s progression from a sprained MCL in the Super Bowl is encouraging. Ngata appears to be in good shape and not overweight and taking plays off as had been previously reported by other outlets. During 11-on-11 drills, Ngata ran sideline to sideline multiple times and looked to be pain free.

Ed Dickson Ready To Step Up?

Tight end Ed Dickson has been overshadowed by Dennis Pitta, who was chosen 44 spots behind Dickson in the 2010 draft. During the offseason, Pitta received a second-round tender worth $2.23 million and Dickson signed an original-round tender (third) worth $1.32 million.

Dickson has invested the sweat equity to improve during the offseason and even participated in OTA’s prior to signing his tender, guaranteeing him that he wouldn’t lose his $1.32 million if injured. Dickson didn’t do anything to stand out but his commitment and participation are likely to capture the attention of the coaching staff.

Wide Receiver Sleeper?

Throughout training camp, the wide receiver position will receive a lot of attention as the Ravens try to find a replacement for Anquan Boldin to help get the most out of their $120 million investment in quarterback Joe Flacco. While the intensity of practice was the least the team will see the entire training camp period, wide receiver Rashaad Carter (Tusculum) was the target of plenty of Flacco’s passes today.

Carter is 6-3, 205 pounds and stood out today during a practice where the majority of the guys participating will fail to make the Ravens roster. It’s not worth really getting on the Carter bandwagon yet, but in a position with such need for the Ravens, Carter is someone I’ll at least keep more of an eye on as the first week of training camp continues.

Veterans Report Wednesday

Veterans are scheduled to report to the Under Armour Performnace Center on Wednesday between 10 a.m. – 3 p.m. Outside linebackers Terrell Suggs and Elvis Dumervil will meet with the media tomorrow around 3 p.m. to field questions from the media.

The first full practice will be on Thursday at 2:30 p.m.
