Cornerback Position Has a Rough Day

The Ravens lack of depth at cornerback took another blow on Thursday as the team announced that Dominique Franks was unable to practice due to a failed conditioning test.

To make matters worse free agent cornerback Aaron Ross suffered a torn Achilles while taking his conditioning test.

Signed during the team’s minicamp, Franks and Ross were brought in to compete for the vacant nickel cornerback position in light of Corey Graham’s departure via free agency. Until Franks returns, it appears as if Asa Jackson and Chykie Brown are the clear front runners as training camp kicks off.

More Notes & Observations

Haloti Ngata looks like he took the last five weeks seriously as he appears to be in fantastic shape and is healthy for the first time in a while. During positional drills, Ngata looked quick, powerful and happy to be back on the field.

Rookie third-round draft pick safety Terrence Brooks continued to play behind free agent Darian Stewart practicing with the second and third team defense. It’s early, though, so expect Brooks to battle it out with Stewart as the summer wears on.

Cornerback Lardarius Webb had a rough outing during his first practice of training camp as the veteran was beaten for two touchdowns. Wide receiver Steve Smith beat Webby for a 70-yard touchdown score and bubble wide receiver Deonte Thompson slipped past him for a 25-yard score. Don’t read too much into it as Webb will surely return to his form when they put the pads on.

Undrafted rookie cornerback Tramain Jacobs could prove to be a sleeper for the Ravens secondary this year. Jacobs had a solid outing shutting down opposing wide receivers with two passes defensed and a near interception.

Rookie linebacker C.J. Mosley continued his trend of running with the first team defense. Second year linebacker Arthur Brown was also seen taking some reps with the first team defense.

11 on 11 Observations

Terrell Suggs started his training camp out right making some nice moves to get around the offensive line. Elvis Dumervil looks like he is carrying his added weight well. He was seen flying through drills and was quicker to the ball on run plays.

It was fun to watch rookie receiver Michael Campanaro and 3rd-year cornerback Asa Jackson battle it out.  The two speedsters both made solid plays on consecutive downs (1 catch, 1 pass defensed).

After struggling with his weight in the past, linebacker Courtney Upshaw looks to be in shape. Upshaw, the Ravens 2012 second-round pick drew praise from Terrell Suggs for his physicality and ability to play the position yesterday.

Here is what I would like to know. My understanding was that they told Drayton Florence that they like what they saw from him but that they can’t sign everyone that shows up at a tryout but that they were impressed enough to keep him on speed dial if a need pops up well, if your Drayton are you thinking to yourself”I hope the Ravens are a team that keeps their word” right about now. As a fan, I want my team to be honest with players if he don’t have it anymore just tell him that instead of giving him any false illusions of a phone call if a injury happens.
