Garceau .... although the best ever was Jon Miller.

3 things:

1. Jon Miller was never a TV sports anchor in Baltimore. He was the play-by-play voice of the Orioles...two entirely different jobs. Confusing the 2 is hard to believe.

2. Pete Gilbert is one of the worst anchors to ever hit the Baltimore airwaves. He routinely leaves out big local stories and gets, scores, stats and names wrong a lot. He is below average at best.

3. Scott Garceau will go down in the local sports HOF as one of the best Baltimore sports anchors in history. He does everything well and doesn't have any stupid schtick like Cunningham does or John Buren did. Garceau knew exactly what to do all the time...and he wore more hats than most local anchors when he did the studio sportscasts, Ravens foootball, college lax, college hoops and the Turkey Bowl. Well done Scott....well done.

Know what the facts are before you slam people.

Although his main function was radio, Miller filled in on TV for WFBR (Owned by Channel 45 if my grand marnier damaged memory serves me) back in the early 80's. Not knowing that is hard to believe.

Jon Miller was never known in Baltimore as a FT sports anchor. Filling in now and then doesn't put him in the same category as Sandusky, Cunningham, Garceau, etc. Sorry if you got offended, but your inclusion of Miller in the debate is just not relevant.

BTW...I would say he was the best PBP voice the Orioles ever had, but that is a different topic.

Scott Garceau is the best in the area.

Bruce Cunningham a very close second(even after he was rude to me back in my college days).

The worst in this area are:
Pete Gilbert
Steve Davis

I don't watch WJZ's news cast so I can't comment on Viv's news duties. I know on the radio he comes across as someone that doesn't want to burn his journalistic bridges.

I think Viv is good...not great.

I avoid Cunningham at all costs. He's just too cutesy for me and doesn't know the local side of sports, like lacrosse, high school football, college sports as well as he should. He needs more Keith Mills in him.

Since I've moved from Baltimore years ago I really don't have any experience listening to the current crop of sport guys but it's hard for me to believe that any of them can be better than Garceau right now. For me, Scott was the worthy successor to Bagli as top sportscaster in town.

Here at the beach, the folks on-air at our local stations sound as if it's their first gig out of college, except I think that's an insult to college.

Bruce Cunningham is awful on the news, and he's not much better as the stadium PA announcer.

Garceau is probably the best on the list, but I usually make it a point to avoid Channel 2.

Speaking of John Buren, whatever happened to him? Last I heard he was into real estate now.

Jon Miller should not be in this conversation.

Garceau is solid as is Sandusky.

Where's Stan Saunders?

I have always liked Scott Garceau a lot, so he would get my vote. Not only has he always been good as an anchor, he also has always come across as a genuinely nice guy. Big thumbs up.

As others have pointed out already, Jon Miller should not be in this discussion (although he is still a great play-by-play radio and TV guy and one of the reasons that Orioles fans think Peter Angelos is the antichrist, since he pretty much ran him out of town).

Viv is okay, although I hear him on the radio more than I see him on TV. I'd like his radio show a lot more if he had a better sidekick.

I honestly don't even know who Pete Gilbert is.

Miller is known as a radio guy, not a local sportscaster.

I fail to see how he belongs in this conversation at all.

Chuck Thompson is and always will be a Baltimore treasure, but Jon Miller is the best there is today. It's a shame he's not here anymore.

And I don't know what PSU's point was either.

yeah...PSU...what is your point? You brought up Jon Miller in a thread where he is not relevant? And then you say I am back pedaling?
Do enlighten us...please. What does this mean:

Jon Miller.
* sigh *

And to Ravensterps I respectfully disagree. When I watch a sportscast and know the players names and what happened in a game better than the anchor, he can't be viewed as "good" in my book...doesn't matter who he is. And most times when I watch Gilbert he makes mistakes.

BUT your B'more history card will have to be revoked for not remembering Miller's time on TV! :D

Keith Mills does the AM sports updates on WBAL 1090 AM radio and often hosts some weekend talk shows on the same station...so he is still in the mix in the Baltimore area. I agree, he has always been good.

And I asked several people, older than I am, about Jon Miller ever being on TV in Baltimore and not one of them recalls ever seeing him as a sports anchor. Are you sure you have the right guy?

Point being Miller was the best in Baltimore's recent history before getting run out of town, at which point he went on to do TV...

I know he wasn't relevant in the conversation. I was bringing him up as best sportscaster in Baltimore (at least in my generation), and out of regret for him not being here anymore. Nostalgia, if you will. LDO he's not here anymore...that wasn't the point.

Miller is a play by play man on TV (as he was on radio), not a sportscaster. He does play by play for live games and is not an anchor on the news. That's the point of why he doesn't belong in this conversation.

Jon Miller did radio and TV play by play here and worked the ESPN Sunday night games. He now does it for the Giants in SF and still works ESPN. He was never a sports anchor.

What???? Jon Miller couldn't hold Chuck Thompson's jock strap. Ain't the beer cold, and go to war Miss Agnes!
Ted, I think you are letting your bias get you. Chuck was great. Miller was just as good and had a little something extra.

Don't think I am slighting Thompson, I might even give him a play-by-play edge is we include all sports. Thompson was KING of radio PBP for a football game. I have never heard anybody describe the NFL as well on radio, you could watch the game in your head he called it so well. Most PBP guys waste time trying to name who did what, while Thompson would tell you the ball was caught at the 20 and moved to the 15 where he was tackled. He would then give the names of the players involved.

Miller is that good with baseball, as was Chuck.

Didn't I just hear a few days ago that Scott Garceau is walking away from his anchor role and is going to just do special assignments and things like that for Channel 2? If that's true, it's ironic that he seems to be the clear favorite among our group.

Scott has grown weary of the grind and arriving at home 1 in the morning...he's done it for 30 years. He will continue to do projects with WMAR and he is open to do projects with other national sports media outlets as well.

Keith Mills screwed up a good thing when he got busted. I personally don't really give a shit who I watch as I rotate between 11 and 13.

Stan Saunders is funny to me. He seems like he enjoys reporting ANYTHING!

Great column, Tony. Thanks for writing it, and capturing what those of us who never actually met Scott thought he was all about. It actually reminds me very much of some of the tributes I read and heard about Jim McKay when he passed away last month -- a frequently heard comment was "The guy you saw on television was the same guy you might run into in a hotel lobby or restaraunt." That's what I always thought about Scott, that he would be the same guy I watched on TV if I just happened to run into him somewhere.

Well, good luck to him, he's earned this time off and occasional assignments.

I've heard Cunningham mispronounce players names for an entire game at M&T before...and he has the roster right in front of him.

He called Ronnie Prude, Ronnie Perdue for years!!!

His Ravens show would end if Aaron Wilson left.

Houston,
Keith Mills got busted for a prescription drug thing, again. So he has been around, just not the big force he once was. It was way cool when he was the #2 to Garceau. Probably the only reason I would watch Channel 2. or 12 or whatever the hell it is now on the convoluted cable/sat channels up there.

As for the others, its Garceau hands down as the best. I will surely miss him. Kinda reminds me of the impact Tim Russert had on national politics, Garceau had that kind of impact in Baltimore football sports.

Bruce Cunningham? He seems to be a bit full of himself IMHO. Aaron Wilson is the star of that show yet BC continually cuts him off to interject his "wisdom" or other comments.

Mark Viviano to me seems to lose points for that radio show the day after with the Bulldog. That is a lot of wasted airspace.

Um, if some of these seem delayed, its because I responded at the end of the first page, not knowing there was another.
