(I hate it when threads get longer and hard to read so I'm strarting a new one)

I'll put this information into the newsletter - very soon, but I want to get this sorted prior to publishing it.

:haggis :eng: Subject to final confirmation, and other things going wrong, Gordon and I will be set for the :celery 2009 UKR's trip :celery on the weekend of 26th / 27th of September to enjoy the game with CLEVELAND !!!

I even thought of wearing my old Browns cap for some of the trip to pay homage to the fact that I used to support them - but NO!!! Too long ago, too much s&*t from their fans to pay any respect.

Yep, going to get the holidays confirmed tomorrow if I possible.

Checked the college football schedules and both Towson and Maryland are at home on the Saturday (Towson host Morgan State and Maryland host Rutgers.) Don't know if that interests you at all Dave. But sightseeing while on Friday and Monday interests me. What all is there to see in the area?

You can do a day in Baltimore, but my advice is that if you've got a full day (i.e. fly in Thursday), head down to D.C. for the day, see the monuments, maybe a couple of the Smithsonian museums etc.

Something must be wrong with the site as I have posted twice on this thread.

Can anyone advise me the the pro's and con's of watching the Towson game verses Maryland ?

UKRavenGordon
06-14-2009, 04:33 PM
For Maryland:

Better quality of team;
Better opponent;
Bigger crowd.

For Towson;

Easier to get to.

Somebody like Tim may be able to assist more here.

Greg

So how many of your are coming?

This should be an easier game to get tickets for since the Browns are projected to blow chunks.

Think its just Dave and myself. First time for me!

I can't help with the Maryland vs. Towson question, since I've never attended a game at Towson (a couple of my kids did, however, and one remarked that the games were lame - but he was pissed due to the alcohol restrictions). Note, however, that this game, I believe, is being played at 4 pm at Morgan State's Hughes Stadium, not Towson's Unitas Stadium. Should you decide to go to Morgan State's stadium (not recommended), you would have an hour between the College Park and Baltimore games, which would be about an hour's ride.

But let's further complicate your decision-making: Navy is home vs. W. Kentucky -- 3:30 pm start. It would be possible to see a College Park - Annapolis doubleheader (I can tell you from personal experience - I attend all Navy home games and at least one or two Terps games annually, sometimes on the same day if I can get away with it). Byrd Stadium and Navy-Marine Corps Stadium are 30 miles apart, 95% via freeway. The biggest time factor is parking and exiting. College Park can be daunting if there's a large crowd. Navy is no problem, since I can share my top-secret free parking location 2 blocks from the stadium, not co-mingled with stadium lot traffic.

You should either skip the last 7 -10 minutes of the Terps-Rutgers game if you wanted to catch the jet flyover in Annapolis (every game), or watch the Maryland game in its entirety and miss the first 10 minutes or so of the Navy game.

While both are Division 1-A, the games at College Park and Annapolis are very different. e.g. College Park tailgating = beer, Navy = martinis. College Park = hodge podge stadium but much bigger, Navy = one of the best football only stadia on the East Coast (sightlines, access, food), college or NFL. Navy games are more subdued, except for the Middies section which does a lot in unison (military school and all). Games and tailgating at both stadia are a lot of fun.

If you decide on Navy, I can get you tickets (as a season ticket holder, I have priority for extras), and parking as aforementioned. Also, I may want to tag up with you in College Park and ride down to Annapolis with you -- my best friend may be visiting Maryland that same weekend and we are discussing doing the Terps-Navy-Ravens trifecta as well. (My wife frowns on these football safaris of mine, so I jump at the chance to tell her that I am required to do so to be a good host!)

as to visiting the Nation's Crime Capital:

You can do a day in Baltimore, but my advice is that if you've got a full day (i.e. fly in Thursday), head down to D.C. for the day, see the monuments, maybe a couple of the Smithsonian museums etc.

One caution: in late September, the Federal workforce is typically at 99+% strength, finding reckless ways to waste our tax money before appropriations expire at midnight September 30th. I worked many years in downtown DC and can attest to the extra traffic and parking congestion. If you still have that foreign visitors' itch to see DC landmarks, I suggest staying in a cheaper Baltimore area hotel, riding the MARC Train for $10 or so R/T, and getting around DC via a $31.50 day pass on the Old Town Trolley Tours (http://www.historictours.com/washington/). The DC Metro (subway) would cost about $10 to get around the sites, but you would miss a lot, have no tour guide, and waste time.

Of course, if you aren't highly motivated to do the DC monuments and buildings, there is plenty to do and see in and around Baltimore and Annapolis. Make sure to allot ample time to sample the cask ales  at the Wharf Rat (http://www.thewharfrat.com/wharf_rat_baltimore_locations.asp) in Fells Point!

I just received an email from the Ravens with the PSL owner ticket lottery application attached. I'm going to request two tickets for the Cleveland game. As I've never been successful in the lottery previously, I'm not holding out hope that it'll be a success but we'll see.

I'm allowed to request two tickets - what do you two want me to ask for?

Upper Midfield: $95
Upper Sideline: $85

Let me know and I'll fax the Ravens the request - got to get it in by 10 July.

UKRaven

Makes no difference to me :) as I'll be at the game.:) The only decision is (when we get tickets ) do we sit together or buddy-up with other people.

Last time I was happy to let Stockers / Chris / Paul sit together whilst I went with Doug / Ken Philips. I'd be happy for Gordon to have the choice in that scenario. :patriot:

UKRaven

Thanks Toe, Ben has now got two more tickets. This gives us the 4 currently needed - Niall + Girlfriend, Gordon + myself.

However, there may be a couple of people (JamesR) who are still thinking about the trip. Also I have raised the possibility of us mixing-up whom we sit with for social reasons.

Flights = done, accomodation = done, tickets = done.

To discuss:

Itinery for Friday  / Saturday (Duck Tour? College game? Oysters?)/ Monday :grbac:
Shirts (White, Black or Purple?) / Flags (National :eng: :ire: :haggis or Union :uk: :ire: ?) / Celery :celery  (how we are to present ourselves in general).

Saturday - I'd love to go to a college game to be honest, but thats only if its cool with you and our host. Although Oysters are appealling!
We have anything planned for Sunday yet? :p
Monday - Does Monday work for the Duck tour or the National Aquarium?

Shirts - It'll be purple for me. Planning on buying a Flacco jersey out there but I'll be taking my Purple Ed Reed one with me.

Flags - I'll be representing with my Saltire :haggis

Looking forward to seeing the Celery tradition in person :celery :celery :celery

Meeting points I'll leave up to Dave and the natives!

Irish - could you just confirm you'll definitely be taking the two tickets I secured for the game? Obviously they're yours if you want them at face value of $85 a piece. Just give me the cash when I see you on the Sunday.

I saw it posted as a noon start at several sites, including Scout (http://maryland.scout.com/3/fbschedule.html). However, the Terps official site stll states "TBA".

UKRavenStockers

I suspect the reason for that is that it'l default to a midday kickoff, but ESPN (who I suspect will have the rights) may shift it to a later kickoff if the Terps beat Cal and both teams are undefeated heading into the game.

Terps are at Cal, home to James Madison and home to MTSU prior to the game (probably 2-1, I can't see us beating Cal, though not out of the question).

Rutgers are home to Cincinnati, home to Howard and home to FIU prior to the game. (Probably 2-1 also, Cincy look like a good bet for the Big East title).

So there's a chance ESPN shift it later depending upon what else they have/decide to broadbast that day, but I'd guess it'll stay midday.

As I said, I'm happy for you to just give me the money at tailgate on gameday and I'll bring the tickets then. I tailgate with MistaT and the other usual suspects. 3 years is about right, Niall. Will you be bringing the latest chaper in your love-life to the tailgate parties?

Terps tailgating should start around 9 am. I may or may not make it: friends are coming into town for the Ravens game and the Saturday Navy game, which starts 3:30 pm, and I am trying to convince them to make it a trifecta to include the Terps game at noon (hopefully).

Where is the Navy game at?

Navy-Marine Corps Memorial Stadium on the outskirts of Annapolis -- see map and photos ---> here (http://maps.google.com/maps?f=q&source=s_q&hl=en&geocode=&q=navy+marine+corps+memorial+stadium,+annapolis+maryland&vps=1&jsv=168d&sll=37.0625,-95.677068&sspn=47.704107,79.013672&ie=UTF8&latlng=9718741013424346083&ei=sZ1rSorqF4jE8ATRqaHPBA&cd=1&usq=navy+marine+corps+memorial+stadium,).

Subject to traffic, it's about 1/2 hour or so from Byrd Stadium in College Park, and another half hour to Baltimore.

How easy are tickets?

Easy to get $22 seats in the end zone, harder but usually not too hard for $32 sideline seats. This game will be a light draw -- below face value sidelines seats should be attainable outside the stadium. If you are antsy about doing that, check out this site (https://www.ticketmrktplace.com/ex/loginFrame.action?team=Navy%20Sports) or the Scout Navy tickets forum (http://mbd.scout.com/mb.aspx?s=240&f=3646) for people selling their tickets. Or PM me and I'll ask around. (My wife & I already have season tickets, but we are past the window when I could have bought extras).

9am should not be a problem - are tickets easy enough to pick up at the stadium?

I've never had a problem picking up tickets outside Byrd Stadium at below face value for non-ACC games.

Best place for Crabcakes is probably G&M's http://www.gandmrestaurant.com/ although they're outside of Baltimore (in Linthicum) so you'd have to drive. We took the UK Ravens here on their last visit.

In Baltimore I'd say Obryckis http://www.obryckis.com/ which is just on the edge of Upper Fell's Point/Butcher's Hill. If you want to splash out, the Prime Rib do amazing crab cakes http://www.theprimerib.com/menu.shtml

Best wings for me are probably Kisling's Tavern (very close to my house) - don't think they have a website but http://www.baltimoresun.com/entertainment/bal-li.venue12jul12,0,7577042.story. Slainte pub in Fell's Point also do good wings www.slaintepub.com. Although it's Irish so you might not fancy that!

I will start pursuing with "The UKRavens are coming!!!! They need Terps tickets".

Gordon and I are good to go. Ben is with CJ's family so we are best out of their hair. Just need Irish's 'squeeze' to okay it. (Might not be a goer if she's got a tourist map of DC !!!!) :glasses:

Don't worry - I'll be there either way, I can't imagine an open top bus tour of DC takes too long! I've been before a few times so I'll know where to go! I'm right in saying it about 30mins from union station to college park, right?

Thanking you! I'll pay anything up to $60 for a Terps ticket, really have no idea how much they are! I've got my cap and T-shirt for the game :rocking:

That should be a good estimate for Saturday DC Metro (no MARC service on Saturdays) - although it could take 45 or so with long waits at the stations. I believe all the Red Line post-accident delays are over. Then it's a good 10-15 minute walk from College Park Metro to Byrd Stadium.

Looking forward to that walk - I used to date a girl who lived on sorority row so will bring back a lot of memories! Keep that quiet when I see you guys though, you know how girls are about ex's!! :girlfight

Thanks for all your help and advice, i really appreciate it!

By the way, anyone tell me where is best to pick up a nice Ravens T or Jersey even a visor for her?

Thank God for that. Believe it or not, but the post office was about to 'close for lunch' (yes, the one downtown really does that) so I had to scribble down your address and hand it over in about 30 seconds. Glad you got them OK as I have little faith in the US Postal Service, to be honest.

Are you tailgating with our crew? The largest selection of Ravens merchandise vendors will be about 100' from our tailgate lot.

This works most of the time:

http://maps.google.com/maps?f=q&source=s_q&hl=en&geocode=&q=ostend+st+baltimore,+md&sll=37.0625,-95.677068&sspn=21.815983,36.914063&ie=UTF8&t=h&layer=c&cbll=39.276115,-76.619036&panoid=qzlCV7PI_84jNoMZzmlcbg&cbp=12,214.09253072443937,,0,3.252043633424807&ll=39.276143,-76.619141&spn=0,359.995708&z=18&iwloc=addr

If that doesn't take you to a street level photo of a small parking lot, then use this address as your mapping software or GPS target: 150 W West St, Baltimore, MD 21230. That is the address for the Sharp-Leadenhall Elementary School, directly across the street from our lot.

Forgot to ask:
FPR and Greg- have you found your new home yet for tailgating? I am still at lot #2 Closest Parking (Sharpe and Ostend).

 Next Thursday!!!!! Game on (even if it is preseason)

We are VERY close to you. Within 30 seconds of walking.

I am working on getting us 5 Terps tickets- Dave, Gordon, Irish (2) and myself. I still don't see where they have confirmed the kickoff time.

If all else fails on the Terps tickets (freebies) I will resort to one of the websites and get 5 together (at a reasonable price). I think Irish said less than $60 would work. I will check with everyone before I make the purchase.

Ravens game---looks like we are all within a block of each other. SWEETTTTT!

'Ride The Ducks' tour business ends Baltimore operation
Company focusing investment in other cities; 29 workers to receive severance

"Ride The Ducks" amphibious sightseeing rides ceased in Baltimore as of Tuesday so the company that operates the tours can concentrate its investments in other cities, an official said Wednesday.

We will have to find something else for you to do.

No luck on getting free Terps tickets yet. Still no game time announcement either.

Hey guys, 2 weeks and counting! Watched the Steelers game last night, was very impressed with them but it was only game one so wait and see I guess...

I know there is a ravens merch stand near the tailgating plot but does anyone know of a shop in DC where I can pick something up for the other half? She really wants to have something before we head over that morning - i've had a look on google maps etc and can't seem to find anything close by...

Can't believe there is still no time for the Terps game!!!

With the Terps & Scarlet Knights both taking hefty defeats last weekend I struggle to see that it won't be a midday kickoff.

Ravens Gear-
which airport are you flying into--BWI or and an actual DC airport? BWI will have gear for you.

Game Day- you will be tailgating right next to Dan the T Shirt man.

Modells
1518 Benning Road
Washington, DC 20002
(202) 399-6583
This is east of downtown DC--15 minute cab ride but I would call and verify they have Purple since you will be in Redskin country.

Hey guys, any word on the Terps kick off time?

I just heard on TV that the Maryland-Rutgers game will have a 3:30 pm kickoff. (It will not be televised.) Enjoy!

(Since Navy-W. Kentucky will also have a 3:30 k/o, I will have to abandon my plans for a weekend trifecta of Maryland football).

does anyone know of a shop in DC where I can pick something up for the other half?

In the Nation's Crime Capital? Doubtful that you'd find anything there. Or anywhere else in Metro DC (Maryland inside the Beltway, or in Virginia). Not that I shop, or go to Metro DC often, but I can't recall ever seeing Ravens wear in stores from the days that I used to work in/around DC.

Some places in Prince George's County outside the Beltway carry Ravens gear, but not recommended unless you come armed to defend yourselves!

Great, 3:30pm works much better! - I think the DC tour begins at 9am and lasts for 2 hours! Can just get off at Union Station and head from there to College Park! :D:happyanim

Its not too long now, damn am I excited!

Lads who are bringing flags, are you putting anything on them? I reckon it will just be for photos while tailgating, can't imagine the Ravens fans in the ground being too impressed if we were to wave them during the game!:taz:

Paul draped his flag over the covering of one of the tunnels at the corner of the endzone when we were there 3 years ago. I think that lasted for about 10 minutes before stadium security asked him to take it off, though I've got the game on DVD and you can make it out a time or two on film if memory serves.
