Sounds like it judging from this blog about Mason (http://ravens24x7.blogspot.com/2009/07/is-masons-retirement-about-something.html)

Or...that something that triggered Mason to pack up his family is he has a girlfriend..probably a little crazy, she is dating a married man..and Derek he wants to get the hell out of town.

I would like to see a "media type" ask him if he has a girlfriend.

The "media types" may know but probably won't say. If they do, the players/organization may blackball them. Probably why this blog was a little vague.

I'm with Tony and just about every other media member still.....total posturing and nothing more.

Ravens aren't budging nor should they.

Let the game of chicken continue.

Tony's column is oddly vague, insiniuating something but not coming out and actually saying it. But I agree that there are some strange elements to this story. We may never know exactly what his motives are, but if it turns out to be nothing more than posturing for more money, I'd be a little disappointed, if not totally surprised.

One aspect of this that hasn't been discussed much (as far as I know) is that if Mason really does retire, he is basically giving up his salary for this coming season, which I think is around three million dollars. That's a lot of money to walk away from, especially if you're worked up over how much you are making.

I think that the Ravens will give Mason most of camp to get his mind right, but at the end of camp if we need a Wr, they may have to put the squeeze on him. They can make him cut a check for 1.4 mil instead of coming in and getting one for 3 mil. In order to get all the cap space they may have to, but it could also be a pretty strong incentive to show up and play, even if it is a slow start as a slot Wr.

The whole thing seems like there is more than just Mason waking up one day and did not want to play anymore, after doing all the rehab and OTAs.

If he wants more money I have no problem with him doing this or whatever his agent tells him to, but it does not seem like that is going on.

Don't you actually have to have a theory to call it a "Conspiracy Theory"?

This article offered no insight other than saying it's possible there is another reasone...

I don't think the author wanted to offer insight. I think he wants us to speculate. I offered the Conspiracy Theory title. My bad.

I think TL is afraid to really put his theory out there. My guess, Mason put "it" in someone else's world and wifey called him out after the McNair tragedy.

Now that's my Conspiracy Theory.

Huh? What? You would?
Aren't you the one who postulated Samari had aids when he was out?

oh, My mistake then. I thought the article was called that.

It's all making sense now...

I really hope that isn't the case. Mason is one player I have always respected and admired. There is not a lot of that in the NFL these days. I would hate to be let down by him.

I was out and about town on appointments and tuned into WNST and heard 9fingered Napoleon talking about the Mason situation and he said that he knows more of what is going on with Mason but he couldn't say on the air. So I do think that at least in part Mason's retirement has to do with good lovin' gone bad. That said, if true Ravens fans might be somewhat happy. If Mrs. Mason wants out and she'll get half, Mason might view the $3 mil he's leaving on the table a little more favorably, don't you think? My bet is that #85 will be in uniform on September 13.

Mason is going through his own family issues as well.

I can understand the vague nature of the post especially if you are dealing with a source that you need to be trustworthy with.

Just as in my statement above, I'll just leave it at that but Mason's situation is part McNair, part contract, part coming off surgery, part family matters.

My gut feeling is that he'll be back by late August.

I once sat with a friend at a game who sits near him. After a Ravens score, I gave him a high four.

Ken Weinman on playmakers tonight said there were some "serious family issues" that he would not elaborate on that is leading him to believe Mason might not return.

Mistress??

Illness??

What else could it possibly be?

I still say Mason has 4.5 million reasons to play this year, and wont leave that money on the table.

Didn't Mason used to always say in interviews how he loves Baltimore, and he wants to stay here permanently, yada yada yada? I'm almost positive he has said that in past interviews, it definitely makes this whole thing more suspicious that he is moving back to Tennessee.

I DisAgree! The Ravens should extend Derrick's contract, and give him a nice signing bonus - the guy deserves it, and can still play at a High Level! Plus, SandBox has a nice comfort level with this guy, which should continue to play out.

I'm wondering if it has to do with the 2 sons that McNair had from the previous relationship and he feels responsible for them. All in good time will we know.
