I think he's the emergency QB, which means in the rare occurence both Boller and McNair are knocked out, we default to Clayton for the remainder of the game, and then red eye Olson or Kordell Stewart in here.

Heard this yesterday. This is hysterical. The biggest problem is that IIRC, if you go to your 3rd QB, you cannot go back to your one or two. If we got in a situation where we'd lose Steve and Kyle, I'd hope we grounded the ball or did a quick kick to give us a series to get one of the back on the field.

Anyone remember that O's game a few years ago where they ran out of pitchers and ended up with the ball boy pitching to try to get us out of the game? I think we ended up losing by 23 runs or something.

The "pitcher" was Manny Alexander. He complained that the O's didn't give him enough playing time because he was a SS/3B when Cal Ripken was here...so we decided to let him pitch, and I believe he gave up 4 or 5 more runs before we went to another pitcher (I think we used up all the pitchers we WANTED to use, then we just had to bring in our other starters).

I don't think it works that way. Prior to every game a team designates it's inactive players - 8 IIRC, which includes it's 3rd QB. That QB only plays if injuries occur to the 1st 2 QBs. He is the only "inactive" player that can actually play.

For team's that do not have 3 QBs, then they still have to designate 8 inactive players, it's just that none of those 8 are a QB.

Clayton is our 3rd QB, but he will not be inactive and not designated as the Emergency QB (otherwise, he'd have to be inactive).

I think we're talking about two different things.

The O's game (btw, I'm not a baseball fan but I saw this game) I'm talking about was finished by an infielder who hadn't pitched since like high school. They didn't go back to a starter because the game was ridiculously out of reach. this was about 4-5 years ago maybe longer.

We entered the 2003 season, I believe it was, with Dave Zastudil as our third. I guess it could be worse, we could have Kordell as our third. ;)

dabruise, we're definitley talking about the same thing. I was quite young when it happened, so I don't remember the end, but Manny Alexander was the guy who pitched...

incidentally, I nominated him for the worst pitcher of O's history list in Roch Kubatko's blog, and people actually began posting support of it, just because of how BAD that loss was.

Understood. I was just commenting that Clayton will not be listed as the 3rd QB on the gameday inactive list, even though he is the 3rd QB on the depth chart, so that it would not cause a problem such as you laid out.

Scallywag, you are absolutely right. I did a little research and it was Manny Alexander. Gave up like 17 runs in an inning. It was horrifying, then amusing, then got downright boring.

Just for my info, how many times since 1996 have the Ravens had 2 QBs knocked out in 1 game?

Seems like a pretty safe bet and a much more productive use of a roster spot to me.

In the unlikely event that Kyle and McNair are both out of the game, unable to return we will lose the game anyway. Lining up 3 TE's, 5 lineman, Clayton, and 2 backs, would not be the end of the world. Just run the option. I'd be surprised if Clayton was not an option QB in highschool.

This is one of the least of my worries.

If both our guys got hurt in one game, we'd be finished anyway. Even if we had St. Pierre or Olson up on the main squad.

I sure am glad we got to keep Olson, having lost Harris and D Anderson (I read somewhere he was going to be the #2 qb for the Brownies).
the concept of using a non-pitcher for baseball garbage time began in the 70s when catcher Elrod Hendricks threw a few innings in a blowout. the team/manager of course; Orioles & Earl Weaver. as I understand it the opposing manager threw a fit; now a lot of teams do this.
