The NFL said that Pryor can play in preseason games after he is drafted and signs, but he is not eligible to practice with his new team or play in a game until Week 6 of the season. Pryor will be allowed at his new team's training facility for meetings and to work with coaches during the time he is ineligible, however.
"... Pryor made decisions that undermine the integrity of the eligibility rules for the NFL Draft," the league said. "Those actions included failing to cooperate with the NCAA and hiring an agent in violation of NCAA rules, which resulted in Ohio State declaring him ineligible to continue playing college football.
"Pryor then applied to enter the NFL after the regular draft. Pryor had accepted at the end of the 2010 college football season a suspension for the first five games of the 2011 season for violating NCAA rules. Pryor will be ineligible to practice prior to or play in the first five games of the NFL regular season after he signs."
Holy hell, what a dangerous precedent Goodell is setting. I thought what happened during your collegiate career (or any time before being drafted) was out the window once you started your NFL career.
What's next? Suspending Willis McGahee depending on the result of the Miami investigation? I'm just really flabbergasted by this.

I agree, it is idiotic. Either let him in or not. I really dislike Goodell and this is more fuel for the fire.

He tried to cheat the system by declaring for the supplemental draft despite the fact that he could have declared for the regular draft.
Further he's only entering the league to avoid a college suspension, the NFL doesn't want to allow college players the option to simply avoid NCAA discipline by jumping to the pros.
The CFL has a similar rule they instituted after Ricky Williams used his first year long suspension to go play CFL ball.

Regardless, I don't like the precedent. The guy has no relation to the NFL, but he'll be suspended if drafted? How about saying you can't go in this year and be done with it.

If anyone didn't think Goodell was completely clueless and in over his head as NFL commissioner, how could you possibly support him now?
Did you think ruling was too strict or too lenient?

I think it was absolutely insane. He's being punished for what he did in college. It's crossing a line he is a moron to cross.

Pryor agreed with it and said he won't appeal. It kind of reminds me of the suspension that Jamal Lewis received. He was not yet a NFL player when he committed the crime but he was still suspended for it. That's why I don't see this as anything new.

It's completely different. Jamal Lewis was allegedly involved in an illegal activity involving drugs. He was CHARGED while he was an NFL player regardless of the date of the transgression. Pryor has allegedly broken NCAA rules and is thus suspended by the NCAA. There's a big big big difference.

I think it was absolutely insane. He's being punished for what he did in college. In theory, I am ok with that. Too often, players break rules to the detriment of the college game and escape all punishment by going to the NFL.
That said, in practice, you have to be consistent. Someone brought up a good point on the radio this morning: If you are going to suspend Pryor for what he did in college, how exactly does Pete Carroll waltz into a multi-million $ job in Seattle?
That is where I have the problem; it is inconsistent.

Bullshit. The NFL is an organization made up of 32 employers. It is up to the individual employer if they want to hire someone with past transgressions. If I committed academic fraud, say, in college and I found a company willing to hire me anyway why shouldn't I work there without punishment?
The NFL isn't about morals and what's right and wrong. It's a source of employment. And if they are willing to employ, then god bless them.
Yeah, I don't like it, either. He's overstepping his bounds, but they've got Pryor by the short and curly's. If he bitches too much, they can just say, "Okay, no problem, see you next April."
I agree with your point about Carroll, and more to the point, Reggie Bush. Where's his suspension for costing USC a national title?:261695:

In fact, why even have college football? Make the offers right out of high-school. Middle school if they show promise.

You still have a choice in the draft. If you don't like Pryor, you don't have to select him. All it takes is 1 team willing to take that chance. Usually that team is the Bengals.

It is...certifiable.
He isn't even on a team...and he's suspended for five games? Bush & Carroll are coo' though. Riiiight...
Goodell has managed to come up with a suspension here that is both insane AND worthless. How much would Pryor be playing the first five games anyway?
I wish someone would tape one of these to his office door...

I think that it was a good call by Goodell. Cheating is cheating.
The NFLPA just had their chance to do something about these suspensions and chose not to. Personally I hate the arbitrary and ambiguous nature of Goodell's ruling but there really is nothing that's going to change it.

Cheating is cheating.
Punishments/fines are haphazard and seemingly random.
That makes Goodell full of doublespeak, lies, and fail.
Is there a suspension coming for Tavares Gooden? He broke NCAA rules as well. Pete Carroll left USC in shambles. Surely he's out the first five games? Good thing Jim Tressel isn't in the NFL. He'd have a suspension coming his way, right Commish? This is the same type of bullshit as Goodell 'fighting' for player safety while pushing for a longer season.

Caleb King (RB-Georgia) is ineligible this year and will be allowed in the NFL draft.
The NFL needs to stop trying to get in bed with the NCAA, or they might catch the hypocrisy themselves..

This is pathetic.
Gene Smith & Jim Tressell offered Terrell Pryor to take a 5 game suspension if he wanted to play in the Sugar Bowl. As long as OSU won that Bowl game and made big money of it, the NCAA was perfectly fine with it. Now that they all made their money and have their pockets filled, they're going to make Pryor suffer for his mistakes, yet take their paycheck and enjoy a nice vacation. It's great to see Jim Tressell leave with MILLIONS of dollars and live a comfortable life, while Pryor is the only one held accountable for his mistakes.
So is Mr. Goddell going to do anything about Peter Carroll? You know the guy that bolted a program before the revelations of cheating came through and is making 8 million dollars a year in the NFL.
The sad part is that he didn't suffer anything (except for a nice big paycheck) yet all those kids who were there AFTER his tenure have to pay for his wrongdoings. So is Goddell going to do something about Carroll and protect the "integrity" of the sport? What a joke.

I like it as well.
These cheaters are viewing the NFL as their safe haven from their misgivings done in college. They get to the pros and almost thumb their nose at the problem, never once caring what they are doing to their institutions after they are outside the reach of the NCAA.
I hope Goddell and the NCAA expand their cooperative.

I'm in this boat as well.
Although I think Pryor should have to wait until April to be eligible. The NFL came out and said he undermined the integrity of the NFL and the supplemental draft. If that's the case, he shouldn't be eligible.

Once again, could somebody PLEASE point out to me evidence that the colleges involved in big time football or basketball today give two shits about anything but raking in the vast quantities of monies these programs generate, and why ANYONE would feel the slightest bit of angst when the programs are forced to lie in a bed of their own making?????? I mean really, the colleges as victims.....

And when did I cast the college as the victim?

I like it.
Good to see this developing cooperative between the NFL and the NCAA.
And the argument that this could / should be retroactive is silly to past players who had NCAA infractions is silly. It's a new initiative and nobody in the past is going to get the horns.
The NFL is becoming the safe haven for those who screw around in the NCAA and I'm getting tired of it.
Kudos Roger!

BL, I agree.
He was dirty, IMO. But you have to start somewhere and just because Carroll got in under the gun doesn't mean they shouldn't start the cooperative.

Jim Tressel was actually a special guest of Mike Brown at Bengals camp the other day. They are very close. Lots of rumors that he's going to get hired by the Bengals next year.
We all know that Goodell wouldn't do shit to a coach no matter what they did. Different rules for players. Our own drunk driving o-line coach is proof of that. Goodell is such a clown. They should make him VP of Marketing instead of Commish because that's all he really does.

Let's see. AJ Green was suspended for 4 games for selling his OWN jersey. He violated NCAA rules. Yet he was eligible for the draft...I wonder why? Maybe because he was a top 5 pick and the NFL didn't want to hurt their next big money maker...
The NFL should NOT punish players for something that happened in a different league. What Pryor did while in college is no business of the NFL. And to let the coaches go nonpunishable is even more hilarious.

Pryor was suspended for the first five games by Ohio State. Then he decides to move to NFL. They're just honoring that suspension so to speak so he can't get away scott free. \
However, now Pryor and lawyer are saying they're going to appeal: http://www.nfl.com/news/story/09000d5d82192eb6/article/pryors-lawyer-plans-to-appeal-qbs-fivegame-suspension
