DMASE... will he end up in SD for Sunday night?

Sucks for him, yesterday he finds out his teams going to the playoffs and today he finds out he won't be part of the run.

He had one of the slowest arcs of play depreciation of any player in NFL history, but it appears that father time has finally caught up with him. He did see several snaps yesterday.

I do as well. You just have to wonder if Flacco helped prolong D-Mase's career by a few years with that arm strength to the sidelines. I'm not sure if anyone in the league throws the sideline out with the velocity of Flacco and that seemed to accentuate Mason's skills wonderfully.

I think Mason should be in the HOF personally, and he was a more productive football player than several already in Canton (see Swann, Lynn and Stallworth, John) but I think he narrowly misses.

I feel a bit sorry for him as well. Good career, underrated player. If Mason could accept his role as mentor, I wonder if he'll end up in coaching.

It's a shame he couldn't get a ring here. He sure deserved it along with
Heap, Reed and Suggs and Ray sure deserves another one.

Damn Billick screwed up the 06 POs at home.

I don't feel sorry for him at all...wait before everybody jumps my ass. I don't think Derrick Mason feels sorry for himself at all (read some D.H Lawrence). He's one tough-ass dude that played at very effective level for more years than I can remember.

In my opinion, Mason deserves an honorary bust in the hallowed halls of Ball So Hard University.

BTW I hope some team in contention could pick him up if they might be thin in the WR corps area. :respect

Imagine the numbers Mase would have put up if he spent his career with Manning, Brady, Brees, or Rodgers. They would be through the roof. He was a great competitor, always reliable, consistent, and very underrated.

No Ravens fan will ever forget his heroic performance against the cowboys in '08, playing with a separated shoulder in a must win december game. His one handed touchdown grab, with his bum arm dangling, has become a franchise moment (on the same level as B. Scott's sack of Ben R. in '06).

He will also be remembered as being instrumental in the early development of Joe Flacco. It is hard to imagine Joe having so much early success without his go-to guy. Mason was his security blanket for his first three years in the league.

Mase gave the Ravens six great years. If this is the end of the line for him, which it probably is, I wish him the best.

Bring Mase back for the playoff run! He'd still be effective in the slot on third downs.

He had one of the slowest arcs of play depreciation of any player in NFL history, but it appears that father time has finally caught up with him. He did see several snaps yesterday.

It didn't help that as the depreciation began to show, his competitive nature took on a more shrill, prima donna tone. It was a sign of his commitment, but it played less and less well as the years went on (and didn't play at all in contexts like the Jets or Texans, where he had no record of service to fall back on).

The dude was a warrior. I kinda hope he takes the hint and hangs it up. That's hard to do for a guy like Mason, but his career doesn't deserve the tarnish of any more failed gigs like in New York or Houston.

Feel sorry for Derrick? Really???

The man got a chance to ply his trade at a game we dream that our bodies could perform and/or withstand. He did it at a high level for almost his entire career. He played in a Superbowl, several Conference Championships and many playoff games.

If he didn't have contemporaries like Randy Moss and Terrell Owens, he would be a first ballot HOFer. He is within the top 10 or 20 on almost every career Wide receiver stat.

He don't need your sympathy.

His time in the NFL has passed, and it is time for him to move to the next phase of his life and career.

Not to mention he was paid well for his work.

I wish him the best. He is a great competitor and I'm excited about whatever he will do next.

Mason hasn't been able to hold on to the ball. That's why he was released. That's what you need on 3rd downs. Mason just can't do it anymore.

Hawk, nobody could have said it better. Too bad he couldn't have gotten a ring in Baltimore, but his long career speaks for itself. He may never get into the HOF, but he gave us Ravens fans some memories that I won't soon forget... Bc

I appreciate what he did. I don't appreciate what he did to his career. His mouth got him pushed out here and pushed out of two other teams.

He could have, and I loath to say it, played it like Hines Ward. Ward knows the game has passed him by, but he can come in and make a play or two a game to help his team win.

Mason only cared about Mason, and that is why he isn't a Raven anymore. His skill set diminished to the point where he was of no value to teams he had no history with.

Oh... you mean Prima Donna (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Prima_donna)

Sorry - pet peeve of mine. People using big words that they don't even know how to spell.

I do agree with the sentiment - Mason was a Prima Donna, but I always rooted for him when he was wearing the purple. After he left... not so much.

I don't feel sorry for the guy.

It happens. It's part of the game.

There isn't much of a market for a 37 year old WR.

Just ask TO and Randy Moss.

That's a great point. If Mason could have just kept his mouth shut and realized guys like Torrey and Boldin are going to be ahead of him he could have been a great addition as a 3rd or 4th receiver much like Hines Ward.

As for mason, he was a great Raven. He answered the bell and played well every week.

Always liked Mason and wished he could have gotten a Ring here, but time moves on and it clearly seems to have caught up with him.

He really did have a great, albeit under the radar, career.

This is clearly just me being a Mason fanboy, but if we were to get to the Super Bowl, is there any way to re-sign the guy the day before the game so he could technically get a ring with us?

Not that this wouldn't piss off all the other guys who worked their asses off during the season :p

I think it would be a really cool gesture to sign him for the playoffs to try to get him a ring before he calls it quits.

What does grammar have to do with totally missing on a term? Why would you even feel the need to comment on his correction? Stop being a douchebag, he was just correcting a common error. It's not smug, it's polite.

I think that would be an insult to whatever young hard working depth kid we have to cut to make room for him.

Mase WAS a good Raven, maybe a great Raven, but that time is over.

I went back and re-watched the highlights of that '08 Dallas game. Just crazy what he did in that game. The one-armed touchdown catch will be my lasting memory of Mason as a Raven. (Well, that and arguing with Joe on the sidelines in Carolina)

Off topic, but one thing I saw in the highlights of that game that I had forgotten about: they ran a fake field goal that was pretty much identical to the the faked PAT/2pter in this years week 1 Yinzer game. Dallas only lined 3 guys up to the right side of the kick defense so the left side of the O-line just blew them out and Koch charged upfield for a first down.

That play and the huge fumble recovery he made in that game were pretty incredible. Getting the ball back after McClain fumbled and getting crunched in the process, with a separated shoulder, was one hell of a gutsy performance.
