Re: Black Monday
Good. Asking a team to completely turn it around in just 2 years is asking too much. Especially when you have a GM who keeps paying running backs huge money. Let the knew GM work with Rivera for a year and then make a decision. Giving a coach 3 years is not unreasonable.

Re: Black Monday
BUF's boards seem to be neutral about it. Surprised, but not excited...not PO'd either.

Annnnnnddddd...once again the Browns, to save face, try to spin it like they walked away first. It's '99 all over again.

Re: Black Monday
The Browns wanted Billick and were ready to close the deal, but when Billick said he wanted to interview in Baltimore, they told him if he did, they would pull their offer. They tried to strong arm him and he didn't blink. Once he walked, the Browns tried to act like they never really wanted him as their HC and that it was their choice, not Billick's.
Then, Carmen Policy went out of his way to badmouth Billick - even while they were saying that they really didn't want him.
As Mark said........spin, spin, spin
Ah, good times......

Re: Black Monday
True what B-more said. Some of the info is included here:
http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/foo...rowns_coaches/
http://www.apnewsarchive.com/1999/Bi...earch;Display_
The Cliff notes are:
Brian Billick was considered to be the Browns' top candidate for the HC job. They had interviewed him earlier, but couldn't actually offer him the job until after the Vikings season ended. When Minnesota lost their playoff game, Carmen Policy dispached Dwight Clark that same night (on Lerner's private jet) to fly to Minnesota, pick up Billick, and fly him back to Cleveland to sign him to a contract.
Billick had an interview with Modell scheduled for that Tuesday, and informed Clark that he wasn't willing to make a final decision until after talking with the Ravens. It was reported that the conversation became somewhat heated. Clark flew home alone, and the next day, Carmen Policy issued a press release stating that Billick was no longer a candidate for the Browns job.
God, you shoulda heard Gary, our resident troll back on the USENET boards, twist himself in knots trying to explain why Billick couldn't POSSIBLY be a good coaching candidate, if he didn't have the common sense to realize what a VASTLY superior coaching opportunity the Browns' HC job was, rather than the Ravens', LOL. As B-more said, "good times, good times".Last edited by MarkS; 01-06-2013 at 11:09 PM.

Re: Black Monday
Yes they were, in addition to "the logic of his logic", don't forget:
> The Browns will beat the 16-30-1 record of the Ravens' first 3 years...
> The Browns will win the SB before the Ravens...
> Antonio Langham was a great CB and the Ravens made a mistake letting him go...
> Rod Woodson is over-the-hill and washed up...
> Jamal "Worley" Lewis is injury prone and will be a bust...
> The Ravens defense is not that good...
As B-More said...good times and memories from the early message boards.

Re: Black Monday
wow that's out of left field. They had a lot of injuries but the defense let them down time and again. Romo took a lot of the blame (and not saying he didn't deserve the critics) but they had the lead in a lot of those games and couldn't hold.
Now will they fire the GM?

Just saw Ryan's classy response to being fired. "I'll be out of work for like five minutes"
