I agree that Ellerbe has played really well. I think Kruger is just edging him out with his ability to consistently rush the passer off the edge. Ellerbe is a good run-stopping ILB and blitzer, but not great in coverage. Manning threw over the middle today straight at our linebackers and had a good bit of success, so I really think the main weakness of our defense is still present--coverage over the short and intermediate middle of the field.

It's definitely close as to which player is more important. Kruger will be more costly but has a bigger impact and plays a less replaceable position. I'd love them to keep both guys, honestly.

The issue I have with Kruger is that he did nothing this year prior to Suggs returning. He had 1.5 sacks through the first seven games of the season, was really a total nonfactor, Suggs comes back, and all of a sudden he blows up? Too much of a coincidence for me. I do appreciate what he has done this playoff run but you have to look at the whole body of work. I think whatever team ends up paying him that kind of money is going to be regretting it this time next year, and the Ravens FO is way too smart to make that mistake.

But imagine another year of development for Kruger playing opposite a healthy Suggs (who already seems to be coming back strong). We could have one of the best pass rush in the league.). Remember Rice asking for 100 million? Yeah like that ever happened. I think Kruger signs for 5/6 million a year, or may possibly get tagged if Flacco is signed before FA.

Kruger is here for what 4, 5 years? In that time he plays half a season of inspired football at doing one good thing and now all of a sudden he wants 9mil? See ya, Paul! You still can't stop the run or set the edge.

I'd rather take that 9 mil and dangle it infront of Brandon Albert. This offense can be VERY good with a solid left tackle (As McKinnie is showing).

Pass rushers always get paid. Some team is going to pay Kruger very big money and it won't be us since we just don't have the cap space. It will be interesting to see how he performs. As we all know Kruger started playing great once Suggs came back. If Kruger is the man, teams are going to double team him every time and take him away. He doesn't have the skills to be a teams only pass rusher even though he's going to get that kind of money.

If he can be had for 5/6 mil, then I'm fine with that. I think that is what a good complimentary rusher should get. The problem is, like GOTA said, I think some team is going to see "ooh, shiny pass rusher" and way overpay him. There are a lot of dumb franchises out there.

Kruger will be re-signed. This off-season is critically important because it's really a new era in this team's history. Ray will be gone. Most likely Reed as well. Birk I think will hang it up, and Boldin may be a casualty.

Ngata, Suggs, and Pollard are leaders but they are no longer young players. Oz and Dee need to start handing this team over to its new cornerstone players. On offense, it's Joe, Rice, and Torrey. On defense, the new vanguard is going to consist of Webb, Ellerbe, and Kruger.

Kruger is the type of player you can build around. He's too valuable.

People that say Kruger might get re-signed need to evaluate our salary cap situation. We only have 37 players under contract, 42 if you include some camp bodies we signed recently. There is no way in hell we are spending anywhere close to nine million a year on Kruger. I bet they will make him a modest offer, probably around four million a year. Some team with a ton of cap space will give him six to seven, maybe more. Defensive ends are in high demand, and he has had a fairly good season on a playoff team. There are some teams that will be loaded with cap space next year so he will get a pretty decent deal.

I don't know if we resign Kruger. It may come down to choosing between Kruger and Ellerbe.

But Paul should understand that a Superbowl MVP award makes it a lot easier to get 9 million a year.

Kruger had 5.5 sacks last year playing PURELY as a nickel specialist. He had 9 sacks this year. What difference does it make what games they came in? He had 5 straight games with a sack in the middle of the season.

Do we hold it against Suggs that he had 6 of his 14 sacks in 2 games last year? Of course not... and speaking of Suggs, if you think his play has anything to do with Kruger's production, you don't watch the games. Nobody is paying extra attention or committing extra blockers to Terrell Suggs right now. That doesn't mean Suggs isn't a factor, he did some good work against Ryan Clady last night, but Kruger's doing his own work against his own blockers.

There are some real misconceptions about Kruger around here. One, that he's only been productive for a short time--false because he was very good rushing the passer since last year when they realized he was an OLB/DE not a 5-tech. Two, that his production has something to do with Suggs--false, he's abusing tackles and tight ends all on his own.

If it's 7+ million a year, he's gone. As I've posted in previous threads, we just don't have that cap flexibility. Not having Ray or Reed back next year is really only a small part of the cap relief picture.

Signing Ellerbe is more important than signing Kruger. We have seen 4 years of good-and-getting-better from Ellerbe. And we need our ILBs more w Ray gone, and McClain a question mark. A lot of these signings (or non-signings) will influence our draft strategy, and vice versa. For $9M a year, see ya
