Re: OT: Remembering Earl Weaver...Rest in Peace
My first Orioles memory, 1969, I was six and we were at a day game in Memorial Stadium. My dad had just bought me popcorn and in those days it came in an orange square cardboard tube with one end closed that you could later turn into a "megaphone". Anyone else remember those?
Anyway, Earl got ripped about a bad call and came out and started yelling at the ump and of course the crowd goes crazy. So I asked my dad why "that man" was yelling at the umpire. My dad said, "Because he's smarter than everyone else and he wants to make sure they know it." Earl got tossed from the game, and this is one of those rare memories that is as vivid for me today as if it happened yesterday.
Maybe it was that orange, Orioles popcorn megaphone that makes it stand out for me. I loved that team.

Re: OT: Earl Weaver Passes Away
A bonafide Baltimore legend has passed.
Earl was responsible for a lot of great memories at Memorial. Thank you very much sir.
I'll never forget we had to win our last 4 games in the final homestand of the season at Memorial, head to head, to pass the division leading Milwaukee Brewers. We won 3 but came up short on the final game, which was Earl's last as Orioles's manager (first retirement). The series was incredibly exciting, but losing the last game in a last ditch bid for an improbable comeback didn't seem to sting that badly. The entire Stadium stayed as Baltimore Fans cheered on Earl. Howard Cosell chronicled the moment and proclaimed the Baltimore Orioles as the finest organization in MLB.
Thanks Earl. RIP, and don't be cussin' out the Umpire up there hear it?!Visit your heroes at the Sports Legends Museum

Re: OT: Remembering Earl Weaver...Rest in Peace
Thanks for the great memories Earl. RIP
Remember he used to turn his hat around while arguing with the umps? He said a few years ago on ESPN that his hat
accidently bumped the chest of an ump and he was fined a whopping $200 which was a lot of money back then and
he wasn't making the millions that Buck and the guys are today.
So he said he always turned his hat around after that so it wouldn't get in the way of arguing.
For some great Earl stories, get JIm Palmers book.
Thanks Earl. You were an important part of our lives growing up.Pic of a natural act.

Re: OT: Remembering Earl Weaver...Rest in Peace
From 1967-1983 no team in baseball had more wins than the Orioles. We were dominant and Earl was great.

"A lot" is a two word expression denoting a great deal or greatly, as in "I like sunshine a lot." "Alot" is a lovable imaginary grammar monster. You can love a lot; you can love an alot; you can love alots a lot; but they are not the same thing.

Too young to remember him but my grandmother (RIP) put a jinx on the O's for firing him, so he must have been a good dude! RIP Earl.

Re: OT: Remembering Earl Weaver...Rest in Peace
I am far too young to have ever seen him coach, (except for 86, when I was 0 years old lolz) but I was lucky enough to get to go see him this year for his statue unveiling. He's such a huge part of the Orioles history. I love hearing Jim Palmer tell stories about him, and the dysfunctional (yet very loving) relationship they have had over the years.

Re: OT: Remembering Earl Weaver...Rest in Peace
I just happen to be wearing an Orioles shirt today when I got the sad news about Earl. In addition to being tossed from both games of a double header, more than once, he also managed to be ejected from a spring training game. The only manager I ever heard of doing that. "It was the principle" I think he said. RIP Earl.
