I remember it from the 1970's, when the Orioles had winning seasons every season. I'm pretty sure it was around the same time as Wild Bill Hagy was spelling out O R I O L E S from section 52(?). The glory days of the O's, because it's not just O, it's O's!

Win a free beer from a 49ers fan by betting they are going to sing a song about Baltimore's defence before the game. You can collect on that bet when they sing the National Anthem.

I think it has been lost since the 13 years of losing, but it isn't "Oh," it is "O's!"

That is why the beer is so much sweeter when you can make a bet with a Steelers fan that before every home game at Heinz Field the home crowd stands and sings a song about Baltimore's defense. Not the Ravens' defense, but Baltimore's defense.

Fair enough. I'd say that too.

    Call it creative license.

BTW, how about the seven nation army chant in the 4th quarter at new England, I could clearly hear it. I think we're the only team that does that. That chant gets me pumped! How cool would it be to hear that at the super bowl, you know when " the hays in the barn". Man ooohh Man this going to be good! - Gonz

Fuck 'em!!!! While I am not allowed to yell "O" during the anthem, I thoroughly enjoy hearing it, especially at away games.
In a 2003 BBC poll that asked Brits to name the "Greatest American Ever", Mr. T came in fourth, behind ML King (3rd), Abe Lincoln (2nd) and Homer Simpson (1st).

To those who do not know, and to bolster Strange Bru's arguement, the original title of the Star Spangled Banner is "Defence of Fort McHenry" .

Atlanta fans were doing it too, several teams in different sports use it.

When I'm at events, I sing the whole anthem. I stress the 'O', of course.

    Agreed.

I was quizzed at the Houston game by someone who felt it was disrespectful.

I reminded him the birthplace of the Anthem was Baltimore and its a way we pay homage to the song.

I hope somebody warns Alicia Keys though. That is something that could throw you off if you are not expecting it.
I'll never forget the time that Yankees fans reprimanded me for it in Baltimore
Yankees fans, seriously, they are the definition of disrespectful fans.
The "Oh" is not as disrespectful as some "remix" would be.

It's a soccer thing. I hate soccer and it makes me feel like I'm watching the world cup. Not a fan.

Correct me if I'm mistaken, but IIRC the "O!" started at Orioles games in the days of the late Wild Bill Hagy, who used to lead the "O-R-I-O-L-E-S-ORIOLES!" chant from Section 34 of Memorial Stadium. Folks took to shouting "O!" at the appropriate point in the National Anthem as if to begin the Orioles chant--and it was "O!", not "O's!"
