Re: Should Ravens consider trading Ray Rice?

I don't see the Ravens trading Ray Rice. He is signed for four more years, and barring injury, I think he will play out that contract with the Ravens. I like Pierce a lot, but I am getting concerned about the number of concussions he is getting. I think I counted at least four times this season when he was to have left games with a concussion. Sometimes he came back into the game, while other times he did not. Nothing wrong with have two good RBs.

Ray Rice signed a 5 year deal with an immediate $15 million bonus that over the 5 years, is prorated for $3 million on top of whatever his base salary is each year (to go along with roster bonuses)...he has another $7 million option bonus coming in March that will have his bonus pro-ration go to $4.75 over the next 4 years.

In respects to a trade, the entire remainder of the bonus gets accelerated immediately to the team trading him...so essentially, we'd have a $12 million cap hit from the rest of his bonus accelerating into our cap the day of the trade. The team trading FOR him, is ONLY responsible for his base salary...they have no obligation for any paid bonuses in real cash as well as the cap (although they'd be responsible for the March bonus if we traded him before the bonus was due...conversely, if we were to trade him AFTER the March option bonus, we'd absorb that cap hit as well...as well as Steve having to write a check for $7 million for nothing).

I'm pretty sure that is how it works, Ravor or someone feel free to chime in with corrections and stuff.
Well if that's the case, then this is a terrible idea. How do you delete threads :-)

It could be even more money if he hit his performance escalator this year. $15 million was just the regular bonus.

this is funny coming from you who has crowned Upshaw better than JJ already.

I didnt say hes better all around, hes not, I said we can adequately replace him with youth (adequate does not mean 100% either). the debate here is if its worth investing in one of those top 5 (or trading and saving) instead of using lesser talent but higher value (Pierce/Rainey or Rookie vs Rice/Pierce). I love Ray as much as the next guy, and hes being paid exactly what hes worth as a top 5 back and will be here for at least the next 2 years. Clearly Pierce doesnt have the resume that Rice does, but that doesnt mean hes incapable. Rice did the same thing after his rookie year and took over for McGahee. Not saying Pierce will take over, he wont, but its not saying that promise hes shown that he couldnt take over. Do you really think this offense comes to a stop if Rice goes down for a lengthy amount of time? because seeing what I did in the playoffs and the end of the season, I dont think itll change much at all. whether thats Rices/Pierce ability or this offense and working through Flacco is another debate.

FO office made its choice and i dont think theyll even consider this option. I just feel theyll look back and say maybe we could have did that differently in hindsight and saved some cap. Especially if we do put the offense on Flacco more and allow him to throw like the "elites" do. You need two backs in this league regardless.
