Re: Flacco Agrees To Deal, Will Sign on Monday
Remember, the guaranteed money he gets THIS year, but it's spread on the cap hits...so if the signing bonus is 45 mil, it's 7.5 M each year to the cap, but Joe pockets that money NOW. So to say "Joe earns more than 61 M in first 3 years" could mainly account for the bonus money paid up front.

Re: Flacco Agrees To Deal, Will Sign on Monday
I may be in minority on this.... I am glad that the front office has reached to a deal with Flacco's agent, which is always great at this time of the year.
However, I dread when I read that Flacco will be the highest paid player. We do have a history of making a player the highest paid player at his said position at the time of a contract's signing as of late, and I can understand that even though I usually do not like it when a player is the highest paid player at his position... But paying a qb with a contract that could potentially worth 20 mil or more annually is ridiculous to me (I wonder how many qbs have won Super Bowl after a mega contract?).
My dislike for a player to be the highest paid player in the NFL has more to do with salary cap. I understand that Joe's contract will be salary cap in year 1; however, what about subsequent years?
For me, I would prefer the front office to be more aggressive in extending a player under his current contract rather than waiting for a contract to expire. Players typically play exceptionally well or well enough in final year of contract.
(I am mindful that we tried to extend players, but I always thought we always seem to be late in extending players or do not have the cap space to do so thanks to big contracts).

Re: Flacco Agrees To Deal, Will Sign on Monday
I knew when I woke up that this was gonna be a good day. The weather was nice, my little boy was all smiles, the commute was brief and pleasant... now I know what the universe was leading me towards.
Great news for the Ravens. Six years at half this price would be even better news, of course, but Joe earned the right to be the highest-paid player (for now) by having a Super Bowl-winning playoff run for the record books. Now I can't wait to see what Rodgers, Ryan, Stafford, Romo and the rest do with this. This deal will be expensive for a lot of teams.
It's almost impossible to win without a quality, reliable starting QB in today's NFL. And now we've got one leading us for the next six years or more. Happy, happy day.

Re: Flacco Agrees To Deal, Will Sign on Monday
We'll know more in a few days but this seems to be the way the game is played with so many other quarterbacks. When the CAP hit is highest for the last few years of the contract they restructure to free up space. In three years Joe will still be young and by then the team CAP will increase.

Re: Flacco Agrees To Deal, Will Sign on Monday
Terrific news!
120.6 over six years, rumors that the cap hit for 2013 is only around 7 mil.
They are keeping the band together guys, and with 11 draft picks, and Ozzie at the helm, repeat sounds really good right about now.
Best thing is, we have a top flight QB for the long term, which will keep us in contention year in and out.

Re: Flacco Agrees To Deal, Will Sign on Monday
Stupid question since I'm not cap savvy. Does gauranteed money count against the cap? Does a bonus? If half is Garaunteed does that mean its 6 for 60m? Or what sorry just confused

Re: Flacco Agrees To Deal, Will Sign on Monday
They offered Flacco 16-17 million per year, but Joe turned it down. Part of his reasoning was that he felt he was worth more, which he proved. Part of his reasoning was, because the structure of their offer would not have earned him more money for the 2012 season.
Flacco bet on himself and is now cashing out. It doesn't really happen that often. He really had Ozzie by the balls and it's the first, and probably the last time we'll ever see that happen.
Bisciotti was probably less reluctant to pay out than Ozzie. Ozzie respects Flacco and probably cares about him as a person, but behind closed doors he had to be thinking "This lucky mutha fucka"."When questioned, the Elders explained that they were in search of magical powers. However, they're actually searching for the whereabouts of a certain ring. This ring is a legendary treasure that long ago was known to exist"

Re: Flacco Agrees To Deal, Will Sign on Monday
Guaranteed money can come in different forms, but it all counts against the cap (at some point during the deal).
Signing bonuses get prorated over 5 years or the remaining years in the deal, whichever is less.
Roster bonuses paid at any point during the deal get applied to that year's cap in full.
Base salaries count for the year they are paid, but they can be guaranteed as well.
If Joe got $60M guaranteed of the $120M, it just means that no matter what happens in terms of him being cut, he walks with the $60M. The deal would still be considered 6 for $120M, and at the end of the deal the full $120M would have been applied to the cap over that 6 years (not necessarily evenly, and how much is applied at each year is dependent on the details/structure of the deal)

Re: Flacco Agrees To Deal, Will Sign on Monday
The other premise is that if the Ravens want consistency on offense, they need consistency from the O-line. Bringing back McKinnie would give them the same O-line in back to back years for the first time since Joe's arrival. That's not to say that McKinnie the only option, or necessarily the best, but before people start talking about moving KO to LT, etc. I think it's huge to give Joe a solid foundation, starting with the O-line. If McKinnie is available at the right price, and things are solid between him and the coaching staff, that would be one less thing to worry about in the quest to make 2012's success the rule rather than the exception.

Re: Flacco Agrees To Deal, Will Sign on Monday
hmm... I see what you mean, but I am not suggesting that they should extend a marginal player or such while under contract. For instance, I was hoping that they would extend Ray Rice (we can agree that he outperformed his rookie contract well into his second or third season).
My rationale is along the line that it will be less costly to extend a great player than sign a new contract under an ever-evolving marketplace.
We could strategically extend certain players so we wouldn't find ourselves in situations like we did a couple years ago when the contracts of three of four starting linebackers were expiring (Suggs was franchise-tagged, if I am not mistaken).

Re: Flacco Agrees To Deal, Will Sign on Monday
The last remark had me laughing.
*laughs*
That was certainly true, and it was a calculated risk on Joe's part.
I was hoping that we would somehow influence the market by not making Joe the highest player in the league because that would likely set precedent for others. Because the QBs are being highest players, I can only imagine that it would be matter of time before other premium positions demand the same. Shit, Cary Williams thought he was worth more than 3 years and 15 mil.
I would not have much of a problem if the salary cap adjusts a bit more. I feel that the current salary cap isn't fitting anymore given the longevity of the players in the league.

I wonder what the Falcons are going to do with Mr. Ryan now?

Re: Flacco Agrees To Deal, Will Sign on Monday
The one guy that is a lock to get more than Flacco is Aaron Rodgers. They got him at a discount on his first extension. Now, they are going to pay out of their ass just as much.
The intriguing guy would be Matt Ryan. If the Falcons have one of their one and done seasons, Atlanta could have a leg to stand on for not paying him more than Flacco. They actually fired their OC after the 2011 season. Ryan had Roddy White and Tony Gonzalez before Julio Jones even arrived."When questioned, the Elders explained that they were in search of magical powers. However, they're actually searching for the whereabouts of a certain ring. This ring is a legendary treasure that long ago was known to exist"

Re: Flacco Agrees To Deal, Will Sign on Monday
Wow Flacco got paid mad chetter. I'm glad he's in bmore for a long time. I don't get the he's the highest paid player in NFL history. That overhyped imo. That title belongs to Calvin Johnson Larry Fitzgerald Adrian Peterson Mario Williams. And ppl complaining we overpaid him. A little but not ad bad as people think. But congratulations # 5!!!!

Re: Flacco Agrees To Deal, Will Sign on Monday
They'll undoubtedly overpay him. He's not a bad QB. In fact, his stats and Joe's stats are pretty similar. But Ryan plays indoors, and has had a stronger supporting cast, at least through the first 5 years. But Joe has a stronger arm. Pound for pound, I'd rather have Joe.
