I think most players would want to keep together the group that just won the Super Bowl. That's why Ozzie is in charge and they're not. These are tough decisions if you approach them from your heart.

Keeping the same team together doesn't mean they will win it again.

I can't blame Anquan for feeling slighted in his release. He is right that losing a lot of these players are going to be big holes to fill.

I don't blame him for feeling disrespected after his great playoff run, but busine$$ trumps feelings and past performance. I surely thought he would be back, but Ozzie has a plan that is not yet obvious to us Ravens fans. He cut $6 mil. off the cap, and looks like the 2013 Ravens will be younger (perhaps not as talented as their 2012 version), but will continue their playoff streak. That's what I'm hoping for... Bc

He said it was bittersweet and he was surprised. Can't necessarily not agree with him. He also said he thought he was going to retire a Raven.

That's what I was thinking when I heard the trade. He stated that he would retire if he wouldn't remain with the Ravens. I guess all that is out the door now?

I can FULLY understand with the Kruger and Ellerbe situations.
There is no way we give them the kind of money they were expecting and received.
My problem is with how the Ravens handled both Boldin and Pollard.
Those guys are what Raven football is about. And they WERE instrumental in winning the Lombardi.
To me, the Boldin thing was insulting to a guy who was THE guy for Joe during this run.
And another thing, with Caldwell actually KNOWING how to use Boldin, his numbers could have been crazy next year compared to the other seasons as a Raven.
His playoff numbers, if you expand them out to the 16 game season, 88 catches for over 1500 yards and 16 TDs.
So, the possibility was there AND he did it against great competition.

As for Pollard, he puts fear in the opposing teams and IS a Pats killer.
As far as him having problems in coverage, not as much as people say, but yes, in the Super Bowl, he looked bad...but then again, I don't know anyone who can run with 6 broken ribs, much less tackle anyone.
BUT, I do remember that hit on Ridgely and I think everyone else does, too.
That was a game changer in the AFCCG AND for the rest of that game, Pat players were looking over their shoulders looking out for him. And because of that, at least two passes were dropped without ANY Raven touching the receivers.

So anyway...I will miss Boldin and Pollard out there and I wished something could have been worked out, not just send them out the door.
We may very well be fine with new guys brought in and I will be up there screaming for them as usual, just kinda surprised me how they handled two veteran, standup guys.

This. I expect Boldin to feel the way he does and I don't blame him. I just don't agree with him. You can't keep everyone together in the NFL anymore.

Re: Boldin on Mike and Mike this Morning.....

Since the day he signed that contract, everybody and their brother, including Boldin himself, knew for a fact that no way, no how was he going to play for the Ravens in 2013 on the terms of that third year. Nobody plays that final year with that big number.

So it has always been known, for the last three years, that this day would come, and Boldin would either sign an extension to lower the 2013 cap hit, or be cut or traded.

They weren't able to work out an extension so............... no mystery what happened next. We've seen it coming for years. If there IS a surprise here it's that the Ravens and Boldin couldn't come to a mutually agreeable extension, that's all.

In the comment section a guy says "one champ wonders"... what?? Remind me again who has been to the show and won it back to back since free agency started? Only 2 teams, Denver and the Patriots. Guy is really going out on a limb there...

I can't say this emphatically enough. Boldin could have been a Raven this year and he could have made $4 million doing it if he really wanted to. His ego would not allow him to to that, so now he feels slighted and is going to criticize the Ravens.

These players complain about contracts not being guaranteed, but I didn't hear Boldin complain when he accepted the $10 million signing bonus for the right of not having the contract guaranteed.

This is a business. Boldin was due 6 million in salary and plays the slot at this point. Welker who is a better slot receiver just got that amount from Denver. How is Ozzy insulting Boldin by suggesting that if he is going to spend 6 million on a slot receiver then he may as well get the better player in Welker or Amendola? I want a GM who insists on value and is not tied to sentiment and fan whims. Thats how you end up like the Steelers are now.

Far as Pollard is concerned. I am sure his big mouth and penchant for personal fouls did not help matters but his release is more a case of him not fitting what the defense is going to need from that position. Signing Canty is a significant upgrade in your interior run defense over Cody/Kemo tandem. From Ozzies perspective he prob feels he needs a safety that can be more balanced or has better cover skills. Say what you want but Pollard is just plain not good in coverage. Simple as that.

From Ozzie's perspective you can like Boldin all you want. The 2 or so million more he was asking Boldin to give back is Chris Canty. That's significant. You can extrapolate his playoff numbers all you want but that's just fun with numbers. Boldins production in the slot does not warrant a 6 million dollar base especially when you have gaping holes at ILB, S, LT etc.

We dropped Boldin over two million. We could have picked up that 2 million by cutting Pollard and not re-signing David Reed. The Boldin move is the one that pisses me off the most. Like Joe, he was coming into his own under Caldwell. Joe and Q had good chemistry. After dumping all of that money into Joe it doesn't make sense to not keep his most reliable target,

    I had a debate with another poster over this...It wasn't $2 million

It would have cost $7.5 million to keep the guy under his contract. He didn't have to and clearly was not going to take a pay cut. Therefore, it was a choice of Boldin for $7.5 mil or no Boldin w/ $6 mil in extra space.

It would be nice if every player would shave 26% off their contracts voluntarily, but that's not how it works.

Based on his few short quotes, it appears that Anquan Boldin has not idea how the NFL salary cap works.

7.5 was his cap hit, salary portion was $6M. Ravens wanted him to take a salary of $4M instead. So how is it not negotiating over $2M?

I think he knows it's a business. He just didn't mention it.
