Bill Belicheck - Evil Mastermind, or Playground Jackass?
Excellent blog today from Sun columnist David Steele. I do not agree with the talking heads who claim there is something commendable or even acceptable about piling up the score unnecessarily.
Between the cheating, the juicing and the running up the score, the franchise has gone from 'face' to 'heel' in half a season, no easy feat.Festivus

Respectfully, I couldnt disagree with you and Steele more.
<placing soap box on ground and stepping on top>
When did we become a society that is so anti-success, anti-competitive and anti-winner?
Many here (and Im not trying to be mean or disrespectful) simply sound jealous to the fact the Pats have one hell of a team. Sure, you can get into the nuances of what play should have been called when they were up 30+ points.
However, I cant speak to others work ethic, but at my job, I dont sit by when Im ahead of the game and blow off the rest of what I need to do or want to do. I also go to school part time for a MA in poli sci. When Im acing a test, I dont blow a few questions so the pimple-faced dude next to me can feel better about his test or care about his self esteem. Im also big into MMA. I dont think its a smart thing for Anderson Silva, when he is beating the piss out of some mope, to take a few punches just to make things closer. I also golf every weekend. I would be livid if the guys in my 4-some were slacking off simply because I was bad and not doing well that day. There is absolutely nothing wrong with competition and nothing wrong with its occasional by-product -- a beat down at the hands of a better opponent. I want every one of the people I face in competition to give me their 100%.
Its a lock the Redskins would never have come from behind to win. Thats not even in doubt. But so what the pats scored as many points as they did? I hope to GOD we can be in that position one day where we can rest our key players during every game! That's something to be sought after, not mocked and ridiculed.
Bellicheat is an asshole, no doubt there either. But what he does have is a team that we should try and emulate!
Nothing bad has ever come from being too successful.WARNING: This post may contain material offensive to those who lack wit, humor, common sense and/or supporting factual or anecdotal evidence. Re: Bill Belicheck - Evil Mastermind, or Playground Jackass?
What a terrible column.
The NFL is a level playing field now. Back in the day there wasn't competitive balance (salary cap, revenue sharing, etc.).
The Pats pulled Brady with 9 minutes left in the game.
The Patriots aren't embarrassing anyone.
The teams that should be embarrassed are the ones they are spanking weekly.
And I hate the Patriots.

I love what they are doing. Houston Raven I love that post. Quite simply amazing. I agree with the sentiment that we are becoming too much of a every kid gets a trophy society.

Let me go on record and say that I hate the Patriots and their hordes of fairweather fans.
That being said, what Belicheck did was great for his team. It wasn't so much about running up the score on one team, but it was about putting fear into every team they have to face for the rest of the season.
The 'Skins are half decent and they got decimated. Now everyone is on notice.

Any team in the NFL would be embarrassed if another team "let up" because they were "winning too much". There is a cure for running up the score. It is called defense.

The Skins suck and they got decimated as badly as they did because New England wanted to run up the score like they were a college team trying to get attention. If Indy had played the Skins at home, they could have decimated them too, if Tony Dungy were so inclined. New England may be in for a surprise when they play a genuinely good team this Sunday. I have a feeling they won't have to worry about running up the score. The 'Skins are half decent and they got decimated. Now everyone is on notice.

Re: Bill Belicheck - Evil Mastermind, or Playground Jackass?
I dunno HW.
Brady was pulled with 9 minutes to go.
You may think Washington sucks but their D isn't all that bad and was made to look like a JV High School team.
Maybe Belichick is doing it for attention. Actually, that's probable.
But the fact is this is the NFL and not college or HS where the decks can be easily stacked for or against certain teams.
Again, I despise the Pats but really don't have a problem with what's gone on so far this season.
If Belichick wants to risk injury to some of his stars, that's on him. And it could very well happen whether it be on purpose or not. Either way he's opening himself up to a whole lot of shit if it happens.

Re: Bill Belicheck - Evil Mastermind, or Playground Jackass?
I wasn't really offering an opinion on whether or not I have a problem with what they are doing, I'm just saying that their assassinations of teams is largely driven by their desire to do just that -- not just win, but to bury teams. Most NFL coaches know when to take their foot off the pedal when they have a big lead, and run out the clock, but Belicheck clearly has a different agenda. I predict it will catch up to him.

Re: Bill Belicheck - Evil Mastermind, or Playground Jackass?
I think Bill Belicheck is one of the greatest coaches of all time. I actually love seeing a team beat up another. This is the NFL, not Pop Warner or High School sports. He makes teams realize just how lousy they are. That is what evokes changes in organizations. I say pile it on, men!!!

Ok, I am in the minority (umm, minority of one).
A little surprised, but I certainly won't press the point.Festivus

I'm with you in a way festivus. Of course, if he wants to run up the score and be a dick, so be it.
I'll be the first to laugh in his face when Brady is trying to throw a bomb with a 3 TD lead and gets leveled and knocked out for the year.
That said, he wants to do it sure, go for it. I'll think he's a dick.

You may be in the minority, but definitely not a minority of one. I don't like it, and like I said earlier in this thread, this will catch up to them.

Maybe not as bad but not long away, hell kids can't even play dodgeball or tag in schools anymore...seriously wtfBelieve me you've got a long long long long long long way to go before you reach that level, that's what we've got in the UK with our non-competitive sports days and the like.
